I like DSL better than Cable. I thought about getting cable a little while ago, but after reading up on it, I decided to stick to DSL.
The thing I dont like about cable is that its a shared connection, so if a lot of people in your area are on at once, its going to affect everyone.
Cable usually has higher upload than DSL, so that is a good point with it. And since Ping times are dependant on your physical location, line noise, line quality and everything else, its hard to say which one is actually better.
I went with Aol+ DSL because there was no installtion of a seperate line, modem was free, line conditioners were free, and its $40 a month. If I had gone with Pacbell, I would have had to pay over $300 for install and modem, plus the monthly fee fluctuates from $40 to $70 a month.
I know that cable requires special installation. Im not too sure about prices though, I do know that cable in my area was the same price as pacbell DSL(install/service and modem).
Best thing to do is research the install/modem and monthly pricing for EVERY DSL/Cable Service in your area, then decide on that. Its also good to try and find people with them in your area and see how they like it. DSLReports.com can look up your zipcode and if people in your area have done reviews of their ISP's, then you can get a pretty good idea on which are good and which suck.
Just dont ever get satelite, and stay away from verizon wireless DSL(Ive heard very bad things about verizon).
