Is it ever legal to take an image from somewhere else and use it on your site.

I mean can i say take an image from blizzard's site throw it on mine and at some place throught the site mention i didnt make the image and blizzard did and have it be ok?

Im trying to develop my own site (wont say what so 8P) but i want to make it very clean and nice from the start so i need to know what is and isnt acceptable when it comes to other people's artwork.

I think Blizzard can answer it better for you:

http://www.blizzard.com/legalfaq.shtml

If you just want the gist, here it is:

Blizzard Entertainment® hereby grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and non- assignable license to use and display, for home, noncommercial and personal use only, one copy of any material and/or software that you may download from this site, including, but not limited to, any files, codes, audio or images incorporated in or generated by the software (collectively the "Downloaded Content") provided, however, that you must include or maintain all copyright and other notices contained or associated with such Downloaded Content. You acknowledge and agree that you may not sublicense, assign or otherwise transfer this license or the Downloaded Content and that no title to the Downloaded Content has been or will be transferred to you from Blizzard Entertainment® or anyone else. You also agree that you will not alter, disassemble, decompile, reverse engineer or otherwise modify the Downloaded Content.

Also, we reserve the right to revoke this limited use license at any time, for any reason, and at the sole discretion of Blizzard Entertainment®. You may not use our materials on sites that feature defamatory pornographic, or inflammatory content, including, but not limited to, hacks and cheats for any of our games or any other content that Blizzard Entertainment® find objectionable or unlawful.

Blizzard was just an example... but i guess you have to get the permission from each individual artist or group to use their stuff then?

Depends on what you're getting and who you are getting it from.

If, for example, you're gonna use a painting or a drawing from a person's personal site to use it for your own, you need to email that person that you are going to use his work. Usually they let you do it, but also say that you can't modify the images in any way whatsoever.

If you plan to get some images from a game site or a commercial site, usually you just need to put a disclaimer at the bottom of your page (or a special page containing a legal faq) which indicates that you got the images from anotehr source.

In any case, it's not a big deal to some big sites (like Blizzard). The disclaimer should be there in case they become like Hasbro and sue the shit outta ya http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/wink.gif

Heh cool thx.

I've tried engineering this site reverse what i normaly do. With this site I,

1) came up with the purpose
2) the content
3) am i capable (found out im not and don't care either, it'll be a learning experience)
4) started to map it out
5) after all that is done im starting the actual page layout

Very backwards for me 8P usualy i just make the layout and find something to stick in it.

Now im deciding on how i want to present it and i just wanted to know if it was a possiblity to do stuff like use a big landscape or some other just pleasing image for almost a splash area or something. Im also debating on a database style approach like the group and this page use or an official style look like something you would see on cnn.com or microsoft.com or something... I think there is only one good way to choose, sleep! :P

I really dont want any of your stuff 8P, tell ya this much though aint a fansite and wont have any forums. While i wanted to play with them they just dont fit and im afraid i would start to mirror this site and i really need to avoid that. When I create something i like to know it was mine. Just for that alone I might not take any images from anywhere... i dunno yet
