i am somewhat new to windows xp and i'm curious to know why sometimes when i fire up task manager i get the little icon in the bottom right tray that has the green bar that goes up and down in relation to how much % of the cpu is being used, and sometimes i don't get the icon? i'm not using the setting that hides icons in the tray. is there some setting that randomly changes? i have found no method to the madness yet. i would like for the icon to show everytime i fire up task manager.

If it doesn't show all the time, it's probably a Windows XP bug. It always stays on in Windows 2000 but it's just a yellow box that displays the CPU usage in a tooltip.

Actually if it doesn't show up all the time, it might be hidden behind the inactive items palet that XP uses. If you click on the carrot symbol next to the clock it should appear.

You need all options check except "minimize on use."

thanks Tweaker, it has been working without all of them checked, but i changed it so that all of them are checked except minimize on use. the options is where i continued checking and unchecking things, which was why it would show sometimes and not show other times. i just did not know what the correct combination was. well thanks again for giving a specific reason why it was not showing all of the time.:)

well, after running my computer with all of the options checked and task manager showing in the tray all of the time for a couple weeks or so, i rebooted the other day, and task manager didn't show up again in the tray when i started task manager. so i finally figured out that there is a method to the maddness! it seems that if i manually start another program from a fresh boot before i start task manager, i do not get task manager in the tray. i tested this several times from a fresh boot, and came to the conclusion that, as long as task manager is the very 1st program that i manually fire up, i get the task manager icon in the tray. if i manually start any other programs before i start task manager, then i do not get the icon in the tray.
i guess if it is a bug, then there is at least a little rhyme and reason to it.

I have Windows XP Pro and my task manager icon does not appear in the tray unless I've actually opened it... Are you sure that's a bug?

my problem was when i would (actually open it), it would not show in the tray.
and no, i'm not sure it's a bug. it could just be the way XP home edition, which is what i'm running, works.:)
