I previously installed XP pro and win 2k server on the same hard drive. Everything seemed to go ok untill about a month after the install of the two OS's. The performance of both OS's seemed to be degrading daily. I ran defrag etc, nothing helped. I decided that I'd reformat and instll only 2k server on the system, this is where things get strange. I attempted to run format c: from a dos prompt (win 98 start up disk) and recieved the following error msg, " format not supported on this drive. Since format was not working for whatever reason, I attempted to "FDISK" again, none of the commands would work as far as deleting any of the partitions. I then tried fdisk/mbr, that command worked but I still could not format or delete any partitions. I then got partition magic. With partition magic I was able to delete the existing partitions and create a new 38 gig NTFS partition. I then ran the 2k set up from the CD. I got the following error msg when I attempted the install, " windows needs at least ***mb of hard drive space to load...................... windows could not locate the required space." (I don't remember the exact wording, but that was close). I found this odd because of the obvious; I just formatted a 38 gig part of the hard drive with NTFS, why couldn't the set up disk see this part of the hard drve? Anyway, I again with partition magic, repartitioned the HD. I dleted everything that I had on there previously and started over. This time I created only one partition (FAT) about 2000 somthing od MB's. (primary partition) I inserted the 2k set up disk. this time it went thru the entire DOS portion of the set up and said, "the dos portion of set up is complete, remove any floppy disks from the A: drive and hit enter to restart. After I hit enter and atempt to start the second portion of the set up, I get the following msg, "no operating system found" HELP PLEASE. How should my hard drive be partitioned????????

Boot off of the Windows 2000 CD.

Delete all partitions under the W2K install and recreate them there.

Quit trying to use Win98 DOS, fdisk and Partition Magic. You're confusing yourself. Under fdisk you need to delete the "non-DOS" partition anyway. The /mbr switch does you no good for W2K.

It's best to make a 7 GB C: partition under the W2K install using NTFS. Then create your second partition after the install using Disk Manager.
