View Full Version : Winamp files lock up computer
Got a bit of a problem here.
Whenever I click on any of my music files (mp3s that are all associated with winamp 3.0) after one click, the entire folder locks up. I cant click anything else in the folder and I cant minimize or close the folder. I always have to go to the task manager and close out the folder that way.
Also, this isnt just with one folder-- it happens with every folder that has a music file.
Anyone know whats up?
Thanks much :)
Win2kpro if you must know :)

try playing music files in another player. if they play fine in another player, then it's probably a bug with that version of winamp. i tried winamp 3.0 a few months back and did not like it one bit. after 30 minutes or so of using it, i uninstalled it and reinstalled winamp 2.78

Winamp 3.0 has kind of a Beta feel to it. I have the same problem. If I open Winamp 3.0 before I click on music files, it works. Clicking on the files to open it seems to yield some strange things.
Yup ion, thats whats been happening.
Ok, so I went and uninstalled winamp 3.0 and installed 2.8 full. I had it associate itself with all music files and whatnot, but I'm still having the same problem as before-- I click on a winamp file and the window that they are in just freezes up.

man, the only thing i can think to possibly try would be to make your music files be associated with another player such as windows media player or any other player you may have. then try playing them in winamp and see if the window freezes like it does when they are associated with winamp. if the window doesn't freeze like that, then try associating with winamp again and see what happens. maybe that will clear any memory your computer had of winamp 3.0..........if all that doesn't clear it up, then maybe you could try restoring your registry back to the date before you installed 3.0. i would hate to have to go to that extreme though!:crap:
Hmm, ok.
How do I go about associating all files with Windows Media Player?
Thanks much for all the help :)
Ugh.
I went and made it so all music files open with media player. Still problems.
Heres the deal.
I have an mp3 on my desktop. I can double click it, open it and play it just fine. Whenever I go into a folder and try to do the same thing with another mp3- thats when I have the problems. This is really odd.
I uninstalled winamp 3 and 2.8. All mp3s are associated with windows media player. Still problems.
Any ideas?
Ok, an update--
I was able to move a whole bunch of mp3s from kazaa lite onto my desktop. I double click them and they play like champs-- no problems at all.
So, I made a new folder and put all these working mp3s in to it.
I open the folder, click on one of the mp3s and the folder freezes.
So, only when an mp3 is in a folder- it freezes the folder.
What is goin on here?

You can open the directories from the playlist editor. It's not really a fix, but it's probably a workaround that will work.

Yeah, that did work. Thanks :)
I went and tried to throw all the music files into a new briefcase and for some reason-- that worked! I dont get it at all.
A question-- is there something I can do in 'folder options' to fix my problem?
Hey once again.
Not to beat a dead horse or anything ,but this problem is really annoying the shit out of me. whenever an mp3 is in a standard folder.... I go to click on them and the entire folder locks up. if I have an mp3 in my briefcase or on the desktop- I have no problem at all.
Does anyone know whats causing this? What could I possibly do to fix it? I'm really desperate now-- this is so annoying :(

Just to ask, AK, did you by chance take these MP3s from a CD-R that was burned earlier? This could either be a bad burn, a bad file move, or possibly it could have something to do with the files being labeled as read-only once they are burned on the CD. Other than that, it sounds like the directory structures may be a bit haywire. Do a full error-check/scan disk then defragment the hard drive. Then see if those folders you were having trouble with work. If not move the MP3s elsewhere, delete the bad folders, make new folders with the same names and then dump the MP3s back in.
Thanks for the reply :)
The weird thing is that every single sound file and mp3 I have cause the lockups. Its not just a bad batch of mp3s that I ripped from a particular cd.
Secondly, its not just a bad folder or two that is giving me problems. Its folders in general. I take all the mp3s out of my current folder- make a new folder and put the mp3s into it and still the folder locks up when I click inside of it. The strangest thing is that for some reason, when I throw the mp3s into a Briefcase- they work fine and the briefcase never gets locked up.
Odd!
I shal give the defrag a shot though... it coldnt hurt :)
Thanks again

Win2k has the ability to compress folders, perhaps this is what happened? Maybe you accidentally turned it on, and it's messing with stuff.
Also, it could be a bad sound codec for media player, and the folder is locking up because of the file preview window. Have you tried turning off the file preview window of the folders (if you have it on?).
Also, if you have installed any strange codec packs (say, nimo for instance), try uninstalling it. It's been known to cause various problems with media file formats.
Holy crap!! You did it man! :D
It was the file preview window! I switched that off and now all my mp3s in regular folders are fine-- no longer does the folder totally lock up!
Thanks a million, Null! :D
My last question is what caused this to happen and is there anything I can do so I can go back to having the file preview window enabled?
Thanks again :)

Not sure. I suspected it might be the file preview window, because that thing is universally problematic IMO. I'd guess it was a bad audio codec (since the preview window uses media player).
It might be possible to specify that windows doesn't preview certain file types, but if it is, I don't know how.

This is odd. Good to see you posting in a different section though AK!
Well you can try uninstallating all of the versions of Media Player or Windows Media Player that you have installed. Then, make sure all of the folders and other references to Windows Media Player and Media Player are gone.
Reinstall the Windows Media Player version of your choice. This *might* fix the previews.
Next, make sure that all sound files are associated with Windows Media Player. Open Meida Player, click Tools, click Options, click the File Types tab, then click the Select All button and the Apply button. Then click okay. Close Windows Media Player.
Again, I always recommend Error Checking or Scandisk when a problem like this comes up. Do this first, then do a Defrag.
Go back to your folder and view your preview. If the folder locks up then I ('sniff 'sniff) recommend backing up all important files (including game saves), and deleting the partition Windows 2000 is on using the Windows 2000 Pro setup CD. Create a new partition using the Windows 2000 Pro setup CD. Install a fresh copy of Windows 2000 Pro to the new partition.
Going this route will force you to reinstall all of your programs and drivers for your system. Make sure that you install the latest versions of all drivers including Direct X and the updates for your motherboard chipset, if there are any. Check device manager when you are done just to make sure you got everything.
Throw Winamp 3.0 away and stick with Winamp 2.x. Winamp 3.0 stinks.
