what type of sound card do you have, I know it sounds silly but sometimes the sound card can cause all kinds of trouble.

Try lower sound hardware acceleration.

Start -> Settings -> control panel -> Multimedia -> Advanced Properties

Lower the hardware accleration until it doesn't happen anymore.

Make sure you're running as little as possible in the background. Kill your instant messenging, temporarily disable your antivirus (not like a virus is gonna get in when you're not surfing or downloading)... you get the idea.

Have you been to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and downloaded the service pack for XP? If you're on 56k dialup, you''ll probably want to start the download before you go to bed or leave the house for the day...

do you know whether your card is 16MB cos that is one of the requirements. Other possibilities.... download and install Direct X 8.1, find a friend or someone who has a similar setup to you and see how it runs on that computer, if it works have a look at what they have that's different and consider changing some of you stuff.... one thing I always suggest is never get a new 3d card until you know that's the problem.
