Sharky Extreme (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/) has put up a buying guide for a high-end gaming PC, and they have put the ceiling at $2500. The guide shows an option for both Pentium 4 and Athlon routes.
One caveat I have here is that they did not include a GeForce3 in their list of options, saying "the prices are still pretty high in relation to the immediate performance benefits you receive." Well guys, a high-end gaming PC is not considered a REAL high-end one without the best graphics card in the market. That and their decision to stick with a 19" monitor instead of a 21-incher.
Still a good guide, if you're willing to go with a gaming system that plays second fiddle to the best out there. Check out the guide here (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/theguide/high_game_pc/).
