Living out in, practically, the middle of no-where, as I do, I have never had the opportunity to go with any type o broadband connection. However I just signed a lease for an apartment, which I will be moving into around the first week of August. It is in the greater Tidewater/Hampton Roads area of Virginia Beach, VA; a rather large city with all kinds of options. However after browsing around I find that all Cable and DSL connection costs (per montly fee) are rather high - $39.99 or more a month; I thought it was cheaper than this :o Is there any sites where you can get listinings of all the broadband providers for a certain area? And while we're on this topic, what is reccomended - Cable or DSL? Thanks! :)

EDIT: Actually looking stuff up over at internetservices.cnet.com (http://internetservices.cnet.com) I see no Cable access, and really the only DSL available is EarthLink which is $29.95/month for the first 6 months then $49.95 a month after that. That's highway robbery. Well, actually it may not be, as I have no idea about broadband being as I said, I live out here where these people won't see broadband for another 10 years :o I just thought this sounded a little steep. Maybe not.. fill me in :) And also "CNet's Ultimate Guide To Cable Access 2003" confirms there is but one provider for cable access - Cox - for $49.99 - way too high :( . I guess I'll be stuck with dialup again

Everything you need to know about broadband, including whats available in your area and unofficial tech support(some is official).

Thanks. I've already checked that out through redwench's suggestion as well =) If I can get a plan from Cox Cable, I would forfeit having a telepphone line (since I have a cell anyways). It'd work out to be about teh same price. Circa $20.00 for the phone line plus $20.00 for the dialup line = $40.00. If I can pay 10 more dollars for a broadband connection, I think I'll go ahead and do that. =)

Be careful with those contracts. Especially if theres any chance that you might be moving(although thats mainly with DSL). Just make sure you read the fine print.

I pay $59 a month right now, started off at $39 on a deluxe plan(1500/256, standard is 1500/128). When my year contract is up in I think september, i can get another contract for cheaper.

why'd the price jump?

It was a special. Its SBC, I got it when they changed their name to SBC Yahoo DSL. 1 year contract, first 6 months $39.99 a month, $59.99 a month after. Comes out to $49 per month average. The standard package deal was $29.99 a month for first 6 months, $39.99 after with a 1 year contract.

I just mentioned that because once your contract is up, you can either go month to month or sign another contract, usually they will offer you another deal when your contract is up.

Circa means time. Not money. You can't just use it in place of "about" or "around" unless you are talking about time.

Just thought you should know.
