Have you recently installed any Windows updates or new drivers? If you have, try restoring back to just before the update with Start > Program > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
If a rollback isn't applicable, I recommend that you update your drivers for all of your hardware (sound card, video card, network card, cd/dvd rom, any motherboard/chipset drivers).
The next step would be to remove any hardware that isn't required for your computer to boot into Windows. If your problems have stopped, insert what you have removed piece by piece to look for the cause of the problem. Your RAM could also have went bad, so look into a memory tester like DocMemory (http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp).

Thanks totalrecall, I did install the last 4 critical updates ,but all were before my earliest restore point Iwas wondering about these minidump files in the system event log that started on 5/31/03. There's about 12 of them since and none before. It would be easier for me to run the docmemory first to eliminate the memory as the source. i looked at the site and wondered how to get it and run it on win xp home.i can't find any xp compatibility at all Can I do everything I need to on my os.I know I did update a nvidia card and a driver for a dig camera that was never signed by ms.but I never had probs before. how would I go about removing them if necessary. I did also run my computer at driver headquarters.com and it said most of my drivers had updates available. Do you have any ideas on installing the mvsoft info it's not unzipping right-getting errors. Sorry to ask so much and I really appreciate any help I get. Thanks again. PS My symtoms allways occur say when I click to send an email or click to do something else. Never just by themselves.

You install DocMemory on a floppy and boot from that floppy, so you shouldn't have any problem with compatibility.
I downloaded mvPCinfo, and there was a bad CRC for the .hlp file. That file isn't required for operation, so you should be able to continue extraction.
