Uhm, yeah ... guess we got an organism that hates technology... you can find the news here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1402000/1402533.stm).

Now if we can only get a canister of these things and send them out to Ion Storm, we can get rid of all those unsold Daikatana CDs...

Thanks to redwench for the news ;)

A much better application would be to analyze the structure of the chemical (enzyme?) used by the fungus and of the plastic and figure out how it did this. Then chemical engineers would be able to design other chemicals to digest other types of plastics. Then just implant the recombinant DNA into bacteria and release them into garbage piles, have them digest all the plastic into smaller molecules. This could possibly be reabsorbed into the soil and make the ultimate recycling plan. Hrnm...

Only a little weeee problem with that one idea. It would be detrimental to all plastic goods. The plastic eating bacteria would not stay in the dumps, but invade your house..imagine all you polyester clothing falling apart, all your plastic dishes, or maybe your tv case. Heaven forbid! Your keyboard, montor case, maybe your computer case, printers..ack…all stuff plastic would biodegrade, then where would we be… :)
