I'm trying to re-format my harddisk. How do I exit/open command prompt w/o using XP OS?

One way is to use a win98 boot disk. Boot the comp with the floppy in the drive and use the FDisk utility.

Yeah, the NT kernel (which XP uses) isn't dos based like the old win kernel, which is why you can't boot to dos mode like you could in win 98 and 95. However, make yourself a dos floppy disk, make sure you have the proper boot order set in your bios, and you can do it that way.

just a note, if your drive is in ntfs format, that wont help. youd need a fat32 format in order to use dos on it.

I think you can format w/ the Windows XP cd. Just boot from the Cd and check it out.
