Why does it resolve to "www.google.akadns.com" when i attempt to ping "www.google.com" using Windows 2kPro's command prompt ?

Because that's the full hostname.

AKADNS.COM is a DNS service of AKAMAI (http://www.akamai.com), which is an international company that provides multiple, redundant and load-balanced web services. Some of their top level clients include Yahoo and Microsoft. Load balancing helps alleviate server load when a site gets millions upon millions of visitors a day...

The FBI.Gov site used AKAMAI shortly after the 9/11 attacks took place, just to give you an idea what its purpose is...
