Here is the problem :
DirectX refuses to complete the installation whatsoever. Upon reaching the "Finalising" stage, it will ponder a bit before stopping completely with the message "DirectX did not copy a file" , followed by the "Installation Failed" after pressing ok (the only option) with absolutely no helpful hints. Upon reading the "directx.log" i discover to my horror that a file "dxntunp.inf" "cannot be installed".
In an attempt to plug the problem myself, i created the folder and placed the "cannot be installed" file to where it is meant to be (by extracting the file from the redist zips). The error repeated itself, this time with a different directory but the same file and error. I repeat my solution. It still will not work. To make matters worse the directx.log now cannot be opened at all, for no apparent reason so i can't even show you helpful guys who are reading this post right now the log! This is very frustrating!
To elaborate on the problem from my memory :
the first error log it cannot install "dxntunp.inf" to c:\documents and settings\[user name]\local settings\temp\dx422.tmp\ (file / directory name may vary)
the second error log it cannot install "dxntunp.inf" to c:\documents and settings\[user name]\local settings\temp\dx533.tmp\ (file / directory name may vary)
log file cannot be opened after, notepad ask me to ensure the file is there (and as far as i am concerned is there alright, windows explorer even show the bytes the file take up!)
computer is compaq notebook
windows xp home (unprofessional)
2.4 hz i think
256 ram ?
account used has administrative power althought not the administrator account
i did try though to install with "the" administrator in safe mode, same problem
dxdiag now recognises itself as v9.0b of directx, master chief disagrees(my main reason for trying to get this fixed!)
if anyone can help me out i will be more than appreciative for your aid!
