MMX socket error

I get two or more small windows marked MMX, followed by the messages,
<Windows socket error (10065) on API "connect"> and
<Windows socket error (11001) on API "A sync lookup">

These error messages only pop up when I'm offline, but they crash all offline work I'm doing.
Running Windows98.
Any suggestions? Thanks.........
