firewalls! ahh!

i have warcraft3 the frozen throne and whenever i try to have an arranged battle with my friend it says that he has accepted my invite but couldn't join because i have a firewall. what does this mean and can it be taken off my computer so that i can play with him? If so please tell me how. Thank you!!
P.S. I have windows 2000 and a cable hookup. I also have norton antivirus... does that have any effect on this issue? Thanks again!

also, do you use a router?
