excessive pop ups

I get pop up ads constantly that interfere with my usage. I also get porn pop ups and have never been on a porn site. How can I get rid of these without paying through the nose. I use my pop up blocking option???? Can you help me????

joy, you get a whole list of things to do.

run windows update.
scan with at least 2 antiviral scanners, and 1 antitrojan
get and run spybot and adaware, recommend installation of preventative stuff too.
clear your cookies, and disable/prompt 3rd party cookies.
disable the messenger service on xp

that should take care of most of them. the blocker should work on the normal ones.

google toolbar now has a popup blocker on it

Latest version AOL (yuck) has popup blocker with it. Having both Spybot and Adware on the same machine can cause false errors. One seems to think the other is part of the spyware realm.
Popup Stopper has a free version that works fairly well.
