Hi there, I've been playing Diablo 2 on a network almost since the time it came out. The host of the game would always experience this fake lockup (I'm not really sure how to describe it). The computer would seemingly freeze for about 30 seconds to 1 minute or more. After that time, the game would resume as normal (except it ran like a bat out of hell because of all the catching up to do). Anyhow, I just got D2: LoD and it still does it, so I thought I'd ask you guys if you could help me out. I have all the updated drivers, latest patch (1.08). My specs are as follows:

AMD Thunderbird 950MHz
384 megs of ram
GeForce 2 MX
Creative SB PCI512
Windows 98 Second Edition

Thanks for any assistance

I understand you are on a LAN, but it sounds like lag. His machine may have some problems hosting. Some other applications may be interferring, etc.

In this case, his system specs are just as important as yours. You should also consider what other network devices are on your LAN. Are either of you running some other connections besides your network card?...

What kind of network are you on?

At first I thought that maybe the reason for the lag was the fact that one is indeed slower than the other. However we tried both computers as the server. It's just a direct connection. We are both using 3com Etherlink 10/100 cards using a regular crossover cable. We tried using a 10 base/T hub and 2 network cables, but both computers experienced the same host specific problem... we're quite stumped here. As far as other programs, the system tray shows nothing but the audio properties for both computers and we are running no other programs. We were kind of hoping LoD would fix this problem, but it does not. Thank you for your insight.

Take a look here (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1403) if you haven't already. There's some tips there that may help you out.

Both the Blizzard page and the tips I have there should help you. If not, post back with your system specs and we'll see if we can offer some other solutions. Thanks. :)

Thanks a bunch, I've got my other computer upstairs for now, but I'll try it later. I tried the Blizzard link, but it's no longer working :(
I appreciate any more insight you can provide, and as always, thank you for the help; you guys are great, offering free tech support and all.

Blizzard changes their tech support board so much that it's hard to keep track of it.

Anyways a lot of the tips can be found here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/index2.asp?Game=Diablo2&Action=Solution). Setting your virtual memory and the role of your computer to network server should help.

Dandai,

I would be interested to know if this symptom is caused by WMI.

Would you take a look at this thread (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1985) and see if it helps?
