I installed the game. Lost the cd. Got a new harddrive. Backed it up on other comp. Copyed it back. Worked fine until I got the expansion. It says i need to have the game installed, but it is. I don't want to have to wait a month for blizzard to send me another cd, and i can't get through to blizzard tech. So I'm asking if anyone here knows how to just add the game to the registry. I figure there must be a way using regedit.

Sorry. We really can't help you if you lost the CD key. You're only choice is going through Blizzard.

I never lost the cd key. I only said i lost the install cd. The key i have right here. I need help putting the game back into the registry. So every time i put the play cd or expansion cd in it won't say to install the game. The game is there. It's on my hard drive, it works fine. But I can't install the expansion without it being in the registry, and I can't reinstall it to put it in the registry since i lost the install cd and it would take blizzard a month to send me another. So I'm asking if you can help me by telling me how to use regedit or something to manually put it in the registry.

What I find very strange is that, if the game is installed properly and it runs fine, then it SHOULD be in the registry. Otherwise, Windows would not detect the installation, hence it would not be able to run the game... so I dunno how "putting" Diablo II in the registry would be possible if it's already there in the first place.
You said you "copied" the game onto the new hard drive after backing up the old one. How exactly did you "copy" it? I mean, if you copied it onto the new hard drive, not reinstall it, then it was not properly installed at all. And the weird thing is you say the game works fine, so it means Windows detects an "installation" which did not happen in the first place. So how could a game that is not detected in the registry work "fine"?
You can check if Diablo II is indeed installed by running REGEDIT, and going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE ->Blizzard Entertainment. See if "DIABLO II" is there. If it is, then what you are asking for is basically moot, since you can't put something that is already there. However, if you can't find DIABLO II anywhere there, try doing a CTRL-F in REGEDIT and type in "Diablo II" ... if it finds it in several places, then it means it's installed and it's in the registry, hence your question will again be moot...
Post back with more details on how you copied the game onto the new hard drive without the Install CD, so that we can have a clearer picture on how to help you...

I copied it to and from the computer via my network between my old and new comp. I'm no longer sure if it's the registry now, after you just said it wouldn't work at all. My prob is whatever would cause it to say Please install the game whenever i put the play cd in. I've been running the game anyway by going into the game directory and running the diablo II file. Is there some value or something I change or put which will keep it from telling me to install the game whenever i put the play cd in, without having to reinstall the game with the install cd I lost?

Does the "old" hard drive still exist within the network? Because it may be possible that the Diablo II program on your new hard drive is still pointing to the previous installation on the old hard drive through the network. That's the only reason I can think of why Diablo II still runs on your new hard drive even though it wasn't installed properly. I don't even know if this is possible, but it can happen.
Did you check REGEDIT to see if Diablo II is in your registry under Blizzard Entertainment? Check my previous post on how to do it and see if it is there.
You said you go ot the game directory ... I assume this game directory is in your new hard drive. Check to make sure - you may be accessing the old hard drive...
In any case, a reinstallation may be the only thing we can legally recommend. Post back with more details and/or answers to the questions I have above and stick around for more suggestions...

nevermind this post. I just borrowed someone elses install cd. I talked to someone about it and they explained to me that what i was missing was an install path, and that creating one of these is illegal. Thanks anyway.
