Today marks the showing of the last installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy - The Return of the King.

This poll once again asks the obvious question that was asked in the poll two years ago (http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4610) when the Lord of the Rings was first shown in theaters - did you like the movie? Did you love it? Did you hate it? Was it all you expected and more?

Let us know what you liked or hated about it - but be careful about posting spoilers for those who haven't read the books...

oh yeah! it was already showing in the US. Good for you people because here in the Philippines, it will have a "gala premiere" on the 19th. well, only for those who can afford it though at something like USD10 a ticket! For those who cant afford it, im also too cheap to spend that much, we'll have to wait till early next year January 9 where it will have its regular screening..sigh!

just came back from seeing it ... three and a half hours of kickass moviemaking!

Yeah, I voted for the first poll option ... I loved it and it is easily one of the best movies of all time, especially if you include the first two LOTR movies. Jackson pulled out all the stops in this last installment... it's like watching three movies in one.

The battle(s) for Minas Tirith easily dwarf the Clone War in Episode II... If you thought the Battle of Helm's Deep was a massive battle, haha... the ending was very satisfying and was actually much better than the book since they included some parts of the appendix to it (which makes up somewhat for parts of the third book that were not included in the movie)...

The best money I spent on movies in a long time... can't wait for the extended DVD edition :(

so how much does a movie ticket cost in the US?

is the battle at pelennor fields longer than the helm's deep battle in TTT? oops! sorry [spoiler] cant wait to see the easterlings in their mumakils battle with the rohirrims..i bet its really awesome huh?

I dunno about other states, but here in Los Angeles, I paid $7.50 for my matinee tickets (so what is that, more than 410 pesos in Flip cash? hehe) ... regular ticket price here for non-matinee is around $10 to $12 depending on the theater (more than 550-650 pesos if you convert it)...

The battle at Pelennor Fields came in three or four phases in the movie, so yes, it's almost two times longer than the battle of Helm's Deep. Each phase was more jaw-dropping then the one before it... A few people watching the movie, including me, can't help but say "woohoo!" with each phase... Awesome is gross understatement for the battles in this movie, hehe...

Went and saw it last night with a chick from work, ****ing good flick. With all the shit he cut out I can't believe it's almost 3.5 hours long. Rumor is he cut out over an hour for the theatrical edition, so the extended DVD will be upwards of five hours.
Oh, and hi, my internet connection is working again, whole setup was fried by a static charge over a week ago.

i heard that it was good, but the begining was weird and the end dragged on... and that two towers was the best of the 3 films... going to see it tonite to decide for myself though...

5 hr directors cut... when they release the 600 disc collectors edition of the trilogy i think there should be a contest of who can watch all content w/o passing out

I don't think this is a spoiler but just in case...

I saw it yesterday after work and I thought it was by far the best of the three. The battle of Pelinore(sp?) fields was just about the most exciting half hour of cinema I've ever seen...the Oeliphants(?sp) were amazing.

The ending was just plain ridiculous. I almost counldn't believe that PJ could let that happen. After the hobbits came back to the shire, every time a new scene started everyone in the theater started laughing becuase the damn thing just wouldn't end. I could have easily sat through an extra hour of the scouring of the shire and his other cuts though.

i have a question for those who've already seen this movie. [yeah, i know, that's what this thread is for, right?]
DO you think PJ really did justice to Saruman's character by not letting him appear in the final trilogy's theatrical version?
I've heard stories from those already seen the movie that it's really WHOOOOAAAAAA!!!!!!!!! [indescribable! and as Canis said awesome is a gross understatement] EXCEPT that the ending is freakin' tooo long [bout 25 minutes of shaking and hugging celebrating hobbit's and stuffs]

Saruman is never missed in the movie ... he is only mentioned a couple of times during the beginning of the film, when Gandalf and company visited the flooded Isengard and picked up Merry and Pippin. I actually agree wholeheartedly to his no-show in the final installment ... with the Scouring of the Shire absent (or at least, not shown in the theatrical version), Saruman has no major role in the movie anymore.

I think the 30 minute ending was appropriate just to tie off all the loose ends opened in the first two films. In fact, it actually feels rushed to me, especially if you consider that a significant part of the third book was not included in the movie... a couple of entries in the timeline appendix were made into short scenes, while the most memorable last part of that same appendix wasn't even present where Gimli, who hated water and elves, sailed off in a ship with his great elvish friend Legolas, to return to the homeland of the elves - and thus the last members of the fellowship of the ring passed on and the adventures end...
With a rumored one hour to be added to the extended DVD release, we might actually see a significant amount of additional scenes ... maybe even see the Scouring after all...

Saw it today and I must say I was in total awe. The battle scenes were some of the most impressive use of CGI seen to date. This has definately climbed into my top ten. Can't wait for the extended cut.

Just came back from seeing it today. I have to say that it was a great movie. PJ did a wonderful job bringing the books to the screen. I can't see where I could have wanted anything changed, it just seemed like the way that it was done was the most logical way to film it (and not have a four and a half or five hour movie in the theater). I, too can't wait for the extended version to see what's gonna be put back in! And also, if the scouring of the Shire was going to be left out, then there was no reason to include Saurmon in this one at all.

...just had a thought, wasn't it actually six books? fotr, ttt, and rotk each being comprised of two books? i seem to remember seeing that in my copy (i think it's called an omnibus when it is all in one vloume, i dunno i'm not a bibliophile). if so why not have pj make six feature length movies?

...damnit why didnt i think of this 5 or so years ago?

yeah, i still have yet to see rotk, haven't had to chance to make it out to the theatre. i'll shoot for a matinee though, which would be $6.50ish

best movie i ever saw!
ending could have been shorter and more to the point.
a lot of good and nesessary scens left out tho.
but overall PJ has put out his best work ever with rotk:)

you are correct Erekose. The Lord of the Rings was written as one volume by Tolkien, but was split into three volumes by the publisher. However, in the table of contents, they are split into 6 books. I don't think that each "book" would have been long enough for its own movie, though it would have been nice. Then nothing would have to have been left out. But it probably would have been impossible to find anyone to fund such a venture.

LOTR is highly overrated and its stupid. If i wanted fantasy id go out and read a book and i hate to read so.

I saw it and loved it. I despised the ending at first but I went to see it again and the ending felt rushed.

I haven't read the book so I don't have qualms about stuff being left out, although the idea of Sarumon taking over the Shire after the climax seems ridiculous to me.

Saw it and loved it. I still don't have the extended version of the Two Towers (I thought I would get it for xmas as I got FOTR for last christmas). I thought that the huge battle at Minas Tirith was amazing.

That's my two cents.

hiya people! pardon me if i tried to resurrect this old poll because it's my chance to give my observations to the movie and besides here in the Phils the movie just opened nationwide yesterday.

Yeah, i definitely agreed to all those who liked the movie, particularly to laggy's review. Definitely one of the greatest movie or movie trilogy of all time. Think PJ did a great one as George Lucas did to Star Wars trilogy. They couldn't done it any better.

I particularly liked the Pelennor Fields battle where the scenes resembles ala-Empire Strikes Back. Mumakils as AT-ATs attacking the rebel base in Hoth and the Rohirrims in their horses as medieval version of Rebel pilots in snowspeeders. And the Legolas's scene singlehandedly downing of one of those oliphants? it surely reminded me of Luke's destroying an AT-AT himself. So there, thanks for reading!

Just stumbled upon this forum and thought I'd put my two cents in. I absolutely loved all three movies (and wish PJ would have done The Hobbit also). I do think it was wrong for Sarumon to be left out of the third movie, but not because of the Scouring. Gandalf was supposed to steal his staff and break it. But whatever, will have to wait until the extended comes out and see what all it has. ;) I also wish the movies were more thorough, I wouldn't mind sitting through a 10 hour movie (each installment being that long) if it is as great as the work we've seen in these too short (in my opinion) movies. A lot of care and obvious love has gone into the making of these movies and for some people (which there are quite a few that I've seen) to just say they suck and bad mouth PJ and everyone that likes the movies is just horrible. Then again, a lot of the people that are bad mouthing the movies have not even read the books, and the books are absolutely amazing. In fact I am rereading them now and I just love the way Tolkien paints such a wonderful picture with his words, I always feel like I am in hobbiton or lonely mountain or where ever he takes me. (I happen to be on The Hobbit at the moment if you couldn't have guessed) Well now that I am rambling I had better go. Hope some one actually reads this. Heh.

Ok, I haven't seen any super strong Tolkein enthusiasts speak out yet so I had better say something. First of all, The Lord of the Rings series is beyond all doubt, the most spectacular work of fiction compiled to to this day, period(yes you can qualify that as opinion so don't get riled yet). I have read several historical books about the lord of the rings such as the Silmarillion, and a few of the books of lost tales and would challenge anyone to find another work of fiction as intricate, complete, and brilliant.
Secondly, Peter, Fran, and Philippa did a fantastic job of putting the story on screen. While there may be several deviations to the true story, I understand fully why they made them and agree with them as well. In interest of making the film more widely popular, and in truth, just able to survive on screen, a lot of work had to be done and they nailed it! Every aspect of the film, the acting, the casting, the writing, the score, the artwork, and special effects the list goes on and on, it was all perfect. I wish more than anything else that they could have filmed the scouring of the shire, but they couldn't make 375+ million from a 4 hour long movie. I can't wait to see the special extended edition (due for release next December). I have already made plans with several freinds for our all day long sabatical. I definitely agree with you Goldberry on wishing we could watch an ungodly amount of footage for each film.
In short, if you offered me every movie ever produced or the lord of the rings trilogy, I would choose Lord of the Rings. For all those who think it sucks, I deeply pity you.
