My computer is a little over a year old and it isn't running like it used to. I am usually thorough at defragmenting it often and making sure to keep my anti-virus sofwtare updated. However, I started my first year of college and when I brought the computer to school and hooked it up to their network, it seems all hell broke loose on my machine. It doesn't run anywhere near like it used to the summer before school.
I have a bunch of search engine pop-ups that seem to have attached themselves to my internet explorer. Every time I load IE they come up as well. I've ran my updated Norton Antivirus once a week for the past few weeks but it can't clean the virus that it finds. I have tried using their free software on symantec.com and that does not work either. When I load my computer I also get an error emssage asking me to end the task of some FireDaemon.exe which I'm assuming is yet another virus. I run a search to locate this file to try and do something with it myself but that does not work either.
What it comes down to is this: I have a bunch of viruses, tons of search engine popups embedded in my computer, it takes 10 minutes for windows to completely load, and my computer is generally running slow. I've tried defragging often but that does not give a permanent solution. I've cleaned up my disk, I've removed tons of programs from my startup menu, and still my computer runs slow. I'm thinking of reformatting but I've never reformatted before. I'm running Windows XP. Any input is appreciated and thanks in advance.
