View Full Version : HP Media Center reboots when surfing Internet
Bought a new HP Media Center m385c PC. Connects to the Internet fine via cable modem for updates and installs, but as soon as I launch a browser (IE or Netscape) the PC reboots itself, sometimes instantenously and sometimes after a few minutes, but it always happens. I have talked to 3 different HP support personnel and while they say it is a common occurence - they have not successfully fixed it. Third person blamed it on my ISP - but it is comcast internet which has been reliable for over two years. I am writing on old PC with the cable modem and continues to work fine. I was instructed to close many processes and services running in the background, completed a nondestructive and then destructive recovery but problem continues to exist. Everything else is working great. Is this a bad OS or HD? Should I request the OS CDs or should I return this package as defective? Thanks for any help you can provide...

Well if it was me and they told me they couldn't fix it, even though it's a common occurance, I would return it and get my money back.

If you have not already, turn on XP's firewall. Also, go to (start), right click (my computer), (advanced tab), startup and recovery (settings tab), then under system failure, uncheck (automatically restart) to see if you can get windows to give you some kind of error code.
As a result of your great advice, I received the error BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER (fe). So I removed the USB connection from my cable modem and connected through the old trusty Ethernet port. Internet connection is stable now. Also, now that I had the error, I confirmed the BUG exist in Windows XP "Bugcheck 0x000000FE Under Stress with USB 2.0 Hard Disks." While there is a fix- it is not readily available and has not been fully tested - which goes without saying it's MS.
