I have a Linksys router with a cable connection, my friend also is behind a D-Link router with a DSL connection. We are trying to play a direct TCP/IP game together and we seem to not beable to connect. We have opened ports 4000, 6112-6119, we have tried DMZ, and we always get the same message..."Cannot connect to server". I would like to know how we can make this connection, either way.... for him to host or for me to host, either way it is gettin' blocked. We both run XP home, this shouldn't be so hard... any ideas... anyone??? this is really frustrating me!!! any help or suggestions please!!!!

Check the winxp firewall. It should be disabled if you are using a router that has a NAT. If it is, check your routers to make sure the forwarded ports and forwarding TCP and UDP.

We tried pinging each other and it just times out and both XP machines have the XP firewall disabled. The pings just time out, thats why I know that the routers are blocking both. Do we both of us need to have legit copies to play just peer to peer? I know for bnet you have to, and we have the same copy running with daemon tools, and we just wanna play peer to peer not on bnet? is this possible?? thanks for the replies.... any other ideas?? :o :p

Some routers have a hardware firewall. Check both of them and make sure it is disabled. Anoter solution is hook the cable mode directly to your computer as long as ya'll want to play.

Or you can setup the DMZ on both routers so that the firewall is disabled

This may seem crazy but considering your router gives a LAN address maybe you are giving that address to your friend accidentally or vice versa. Try the different IP.
