How long has your computer been shutting down while playing Diablo II?

What operating system are you using and what are your system specs (CPU, RAM, video card, etc.)?

Do you have a shut-down problem with any other games or applications?

If the problem started only recently, have you installed any new hardware or software? Have you made any system-setting changes recently?

Does the game shut down in both single-player and multi-player mode or just one of them (which one)?

What have you tried so far to solve the problem, if anything?

There can be many causes of abrupt shut-downs or reboots, and we need to narrow down what the problem is.

I've tried to play 2 times yesterday in solo mode and the 2 times it crashed after 5 or 10 min.

I'm using windows xp pro. I have a AMD Athlon 2000+, with 512 mo ram. My video card is a GeForce 4 MX440.

I thought I didn't have problems with others games because yesterday, after diablo 2 crashed, i played another game (bilbo the hobbit) and it run well, but I played this afternoon and now it crashes too.

I didn't make any major changes. I tried to download the latest updates from microsoft, but I was already up to date.

(I'm sorry to have post this thread in this forum, I thought it was only a diablo 2 problem before my other game crashed :S)

Alright... let's take care of some basic things first.

Do you have the latest drivers installed for all of your hardware, especially your video card, sound card and motherboard chipset? Even if your problem isn't related to your drivers, you should still update them if they're out-of-date for optimal stability and performance. Your drivers are the software that allows Windows to "communicate" with your hardware. You can get the latest drivers for your hardware at your PC manufacturer's website or the website of the manufacturer of the piece of hardware in question. If you don't know where to get the latest drivers for something, I can show you if you tell me its make and model. I'd update the drivers for the following hardware:

Video card
Sound card
Motherboard chipset (IDE, AGP, etc.)
Modem/network card
Printer (if you have one)
Scanner (if you have one)
Anything else that you had to install drivers for when you set up your computer

I have the latest drivers for my video card, but i don't know where to get the drivers for my sound card, network card and motherboard chipset.

I wrote everything i could found, i don't know if that's enough:

my mainboard is from soltek: SL-KT400-A4/L, Socket A Mainboard, VIA KT333series.

my sound card: realtek AC'97 Audio

my network card: Fast Ethernet PCI Realteck RTL8139 Family

Download the latest drivers for your motherboard chipset here:

http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/VIA_Hyperion%204IN1_V451v.zip

Download the latest drivers for your sound card here:

ftp://210.51.181.211/pc/ac97/alc650/wdm_a353.exe

Download the latest drivers for your network card here:

ftp://152.104.125.40/cn/nic/rtl8139abcd8130810xseries/winxp-8139(606).zip

If you have any trouble with any of these drivers, simply use Windows XP's "driver rollback feature" to go back to the drivers you were using before.

Install all of these drivers and then play Diablo II again. See if you still have that shut-down problem. If you do, please report back and we will try some other things.

EDIT:

Note - for the network card drivers, copy/paste the URL into your web browser's address bar.

wow thank you for the links :)

I finally figured out the problem: my CPU was too hot.
I cleaned up the fans and I opened my box but I should get a better fan.

But I really thank you for helping me! I will at least have the latest drivers! :)

Yeah, a common cause of abrupt shut-downs and/or reboots is something overheating, possibly one's CPU. I suspected that the problem might be hardware-related, but I wanted to do a few basic software-related things because they're easier to do. :)

If a problem like this starts occurring again all of a sudden and you haven't changed anything with your system, I'd check for dust build-up inside your computer and on your hardware (including your fans). Sometimes a can of compressed air or any other method of removing dust is all it takes to alleviate computer crashes and freezes.
