This may sound like a stupid question, but I must confess, I'm a newbie and am ignorant about this game. I would like to start playing on-line, but when I try to connect to Battle.net, I get an "Unable to Identify Version" error. The more detailed error message is "Battle.net is unable to identify your application version." I am running v 1.00. Is there a way to dl an upgrade for this version or do I need to buy an upgraded version?

This sounds like a Diablo 2 error. The post would be more appropriate there. Sorry, but D2 is not something I'm familiar with.

I think the answer might already be posted there, too.

What game is this? Diablo, Diablo II or StarCraft?

In the past, this kind of error was usually caused by the CIH virus. What antivirus software do you have installed on your computer? You may need to update it or do a complete virus scan of your system...

Here's Blizzard's answer:

Follow those. If it doesn't work, then you may probably have a virus on your computer ... do a complete virus scan ... post back on your progress...

Sorry, My bad...it:eek: it's Diablo II, I have McAfee, but it really sucks! I've done sooo many virus scans and scan disks, and defrags on this d*&$ thing, you wouldn't believe... If I uninstall and reinstall, would that deletet the existing single player games that are saved??? thanks for helping. ;)

You can back up your single player characters by making a copy of C:\Program Files\Diablo II\save (or the path to your save folder).

It seems like there was a problem with one of the patches, where I couldn't upgrade using version 1.00. Do you have the latest Diablo 2 patch (v 1.08) currently installed?

I haven't dl the 1.08 patch yet, I didn't know if that's what I needed to do. I didn't want to loose the single player games that are saved on this computer (it's a friend's computer and he would KILL me if I deleted his game...lol) That's why I thought I'd come here to learn more about the game. I used to play Half-Life on-line all the time, but thought I'd try Diablo II since it's already installed on this computer. :)

just dload the patch manually and scan for virus either bnet is not recognizing ur install, which does happen a lot, or u have a virus that has corrupted ur exe.
