now everytime i try and play D2 with my main character i get this same error, but if i pick another character the game plays fine. can any 1 help me out?

You are going to have to send the information you listed above to Blizzard. -> support@blizzard.com

The programming book says If ASSERT fails, the computer displays a message that lists the file and line number of the macro call.

This is great if you are debugging. It means that they tried to catch errors in the program. However, it is my understanding that this shouldn't happen in a release version. This should only present itself in a debug version of the game.

You need to ask them how to recover without screwing up your character.

not necissarily. should try this first

copy your save folder to a different place on your hard drive
uninstall the game and delete the diabloii folder completely (it wont do it on its own)
reinstall the entire game classic and expansion. then copy the MPQ files to your diabloii directory from the expansion CD
patch the game via bnet or patch download

if your running an NVIDIA chipset revert to 6.31 drivers if you can, they work the best for D2.

dont worry about backing up the save directory if your problem is with closed realm characters. I would in fact advise you to delete any files in your save directory that have to do with your realm characters as these will get recreated the next time you log on with that character.

I was getting the "error decompressing sprite" msg, i uninstalled.. but now my expansion is giving me some stupid message.. i hope you dont get that message, because it gets really frustrating trying to figure out what to do.

"This installation has a bad data file. You should uninstall and reinstall. if you receive this message again, please contact Tech Support."
