Diablo 2 gives me low fps when connected to the net

Hi, I have a problem that everytime I'm connected to the net diablo 2 gives me about 1-3 frames per second.
It does this even when I'm playing SINGLE player.
If I disconnect and reconnect again it returns to normal (30-50 fps).
I use dial up internet. I use 3 different dial-up accounts and they all do the same thing.

My system specs are:
windows 98.
AMD athlon 1.2GHz.
256 SD ram.
GeForce2 MMX-200.

If it does it in single player, try running the setup and setting the video to direct draw. It might not look as pretty, but it should clear things up.

I've tried that. But it doesn't seem to work either.
I think it might have something to do with my modem or something...

Try turning off programs that are loaded in the background when you play (antivirus, firewall, IM software, etc), and see if the performance improves... if you encounter an fps loss even in single player, then your modem might not be the culprit, since it isn't supposed to be involved with anything if you're playing offline by yourself.

The thing is if I disconnect and reconnect again, it returns to normal. Its only the first time I connect to the net via dial up verytime I turn on my comp.
If I reconnect it gives me about 50-75 fps.... But I just don't get why.
