I've had D2 and LoD for a while now. I've had some problems with the newest patch for LoD(1.08 LoD). So I turned to Blizzard, and took their advice on uninstalling and reinstalling. I try to reinstall but everytime I try to install D2 Classic, it will lock up or blue screen me to death. If I do get past Classic installation, I try to install the expansion, but when it installs I get an error saying..
("This installation has a bad data file. You should uninstall and reinstall. if you receive this message again, please contact Tech Support.") Then the process begins again....
Specs: Voodoo3 3000, 800 mhz Athlon, 458 Megs of Memory, Sound card is unknown and my cd rom is a 56x offbrand, works great on other games though.

Hrm, does the cd have any scratches that you can see?

All of the cds are basicly good looking except for the classic play disc, it has the most obvious looking finger prints and theres a pretty small scratch that zig zags like this /\/\/\/
im thinking of borrowing my friends cds and using my keys, maybe that will help...

Check for the CIH virus.
Make sure all of the files in the Diablo 2 folder and subfolders are not set to 'read-only'. Right click on the folder and select Properties. Check, then uncheck the read-only box.

Kane: I took your advice on the cih virus, i ran a program to pretty much stop it from spreading, but not kill it. then ran norton.. i finally got a full scan off of it, but it didnt detect anything. I installed D2 Classic with no problems, but LoD is still giving me problems. :(

Thanks for the help though

I have been having the exact same problem since I bought LOD on june 29. Aarrghh. All the suggestions I have received from blizzard and other helpful fellow gamers have failed to help.
My specs:
AMD T-bird 1ghz
ASUS Geforce 2 MX
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 (slot 4)
3 com Etherlink XL 10/100 (slot 2)
other slots empty
ASUS A7V 133
Tried both win 98 SE and win 2k with the same frustrating errors. Under win 98 there was a conflict with the SB IRQ and another IRQ, since the SB apparently requires 2?. Anyway, this was fixed by assigning IRQ 5 solely to the soundcard. Under 2000 this should not be an issue, according to what I've heard (then again, I don't know more about hardware than I have learned from different websites and forums, so I'm not entirely sure about this)
I have tried all the different suggestions I have been able to find (reinstalled windows several times, manually copied my dII files, unchecking the read-only attribute etc etc). At the moment there are no apparent conflicts on my system and all runs smoothly, but LOD still produces : "This installation has a bad data file.....". My cd-s are perfectly clean and unscratched.
Well, today I'm buying a new dvd/reader and if that makes a difference I will post again. The one I'm using now is Philips PCRW804, which does seem to have quite a few problems.

If you are running windows 2000 right click on your hard drive in windows explorer and click properties. Go to security settings. Make sure that either 'everyone' has full control over the hard drive or that whatever name you are logged on as has full control.
I would suggest adding your user name to the administrator group if its your PC.
