I have a 300 mhz p2, 64 mb ram comp using an mpact 4mb 2xAGP video card and a Creative PCI64 sound card running Windows 98.
All i kno is sometime in march my account got stolen (i didn't try out hacks or give out my password to those spammers in the chat channels). OK...so a few days later the entire game stopped starting up. I didn't bother doing anything at the time since i was po'd at the game anywayz but i've recently tried to play d2c again. I reinstalled the game a few times but everytime i try to start up the game nothing happens. The comp makes some noises like its doing something and just stops. When i hit Alt-Ctrl-Del it says that Diablo II and Game r running. Also, the comp doesn't attempt to read anything from the D drive at all during the start up process. I've checked the registry to make sure it recognizes that the D2 CD is in the D drive and it is.
Anywayz, if anybody has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Thx in advanced :o

The first thing to do would be to update all the drivers you can find. Did you install the latest direct X? www.microsoft.com/directx
What about the latest game patch? Goto www.blizzard.com and get the latest D2 patch.
Shutting down your extra programs also would be useful since you only have 64 megs of RAM. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and leave only systray, explorer, point32 if you have it, and rnaapp if connected to the net via dial up.
Post back and let us know how you're doing.

Thx for the suggestions however i already have the latest direct x, i updated all my drivers, and i run almost nothing (i run "explorer" and "systray"). I just wonder how its possible that i played the game for a good 8 months before it just stopped working. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check the CD out to make sure it's not dirty or scratched. Try cleaning it with a non-abrasive cloth and some Windex or some other mild cleaner.
Does the game run fine before you update the game with the latest patch?
I notice your card also only has 4 megs of RAM. Are you running the game in Directdraw or 3D mode? Try directDraw. You might also try setting your desktop resolution to 640X480 before running the game. That might help if it's a directX glitch or bad video driver.
Your CD drive may also be having trouble reading the CD even if it's clean. Some drives don't agree with the copy protection on the game CD. If you have a new CD drive, check for a Firmware update for the drive. If it's a CD-RW or a multibeam drive like a Kenwood or Delta drive, then there should be an update for the drive. You might also try opening my computer and hitting F5 with the CD tray ejected. Then hit F5 after you insert the CD and the light stops blinking. This might help the system recognize the play system. Especially if youhave autorun disabled.
Post back and let us know how you're doing.

If it was a sudden stop then your RAM may have gone bad. If it just started happening since the 1.08 patch, then your out of luck if you have played any of your characters with that patch, as they will only work with D2 v1.08
remove the game folder entirely after you uninstall. it doesnt do this itself. make sure you back up your save folder to a different locatoin before you delete the D2 folder. Install it, patch it, and copy the MPQ files from your disc to the D2 directory. Make sure your running the game in DirectDraw no matter what the video test tells you do do.
If you updated your video or sound drivers and it started doing this, revert back and see if thats the problem.
You may want to upgrade your computer soon. But its not necissary to solve the problem
