any app: file > open or browse = app hang

When I use any app to file > open or browse, the dialogue box is drawn, but no contents are displayed. The CPU usage for the app goes to 99%. I have been using SP3 for well over a year, but this problem started about 60 days ago.

I had been installing apps so I'm sure its related as it is the only thing that has changed on my system, but I didnt notice which app triggered it.

Is there something I can do to isolate the problem? Perhaps check a "file > open" or browse routine? Any ideas?

check for viruses and spyware with multiple scans for each. also run your maintenance programs if they dont have a fairly frequent schedule.

if that isnt helpful, post your system specs, including cpu, chipset, ram, OS, and anything else that might be relevant.

No spyware or viruses. No fragmentation, encrypted voumes, extraneous tasks. I run a lean machine by design.

RAM, chipset, HD, fan speed, etc: unimportant. It was working fine for years until 60 days ago - its a software problem.
