So I go to reboot my idiot box one time, and it seems to have forgotten what windows is, or that it has access to such a thing. This is a compaq, windows 98, it had been acting fine up until now which I suppose should have told me something was wrong. What I was wondering was if anyone had any suggestions for getting in and at least transfering some files off before I wipe it and start over. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

hmmmnnn.. won't boot into safe mode either huh???
Perhaps you can boot into DOS and put all you can on a floppy (s) if you can, only problem is any file over 1.4Mb wouldn't tranfer to floppy and it also tranfers them in short name too....

Heh, I can't even get it to ask me if I want to boot in safe mode, not that that would matter much since the files I wanted were my anime movies. Floppies wont exactly cut it there, heh heh. It displays the compaq logo and asks for the startup password, but then there's a sort of angry computer noise and it just sits at a black screen instead of going to the windows logo like it normally does.

O.o
angry computer noise? RUN!!!!!!!!!!
stick the drive as slave in another idiot box, you might have a shot at it cooperating with you there.

That's an idea, I'll have to see if anyone is willing to let me fiddle with it on their comp, heh.

I had this problem on someones 486 with win98, it turned out that someone had put a password on the bios. if you take the battery out overnight like, put it back in the next day it should wipe the password and allow you to get into the 'idiot box' then all you have to do is find the 'idiot who put the password on the bios and forgot it !!!!
