It varies by hard drive manufacturer.

I'm sure you could be provided links if you specify the manufacturer.

From Maxtor's website:
Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (or S.M.A.R.T.) is a technology that enables a PC to in some cases predict the future failure of storage devices (like hard disk drives).
Here's the link (http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=h3Q3rY4h&p_lva=&p_faqid=494&p_created=986513330&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTgmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1zbWFydCZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPTMmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9fmFueX4 mcF9wcm9kX2x2bDI9fmFueX4mcF9jYXRfbHZsMT1_YW55fiZwX2NhdF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=)
