My sound keeps coming and going at will, I have to go in to sndvol32 from start and can then watch as the sound slider moves downwards on it's own. I have a fight with it as i keep pushing the slider up it fights me by sliding down can anyone help me fight this invisible demon?? As a last resort i have the local vicar on standby with some holy water.

O.o
a brit!

ensure you dont have any unwanted visitors in your computer causing this problem. if none of the following finds anything that helps, proceed with the rest.

http://security.kolla.de install and update before scanning
www.trojanscan.com
www.trendmicro.com online scan

youll have to repair or replace that file. if a scandisk doesnt work, remove your sound drivers from the device manager, reboot and install freshly downloaded ones at the prompt. a windows repair installation might do the trick as well.

Firstly, thank you redwench for replying so quickly, this Brit appreciates that. I have done a full system scan for viruses and have none, I will now do Disc scan but also when i was in Google yesterday, i had phantom typing on the Google bar, again as i watched, the words "she said" suddenly appeard as though somone else was typing them, after you suggesting that i could have an unwanted visitor, how would i find them??

oh, that doesnt sound good. youll want to do *ugh* multiple virus and spyware scans. in addition to the ones youve already run and the ones above. www.lavasoft.com has another anti spyware program. you should probably google for some trial versions of the better professional avs.

are you using a wireless system in any way? anything from the keyboard to a full network? that could allow someone else's actions to popup on your computer.

Good news, I have run spybot again, anti virus again (Even though i am behind a fire wall)reboot again, and have sound back for now, will think about reinstalling sound though if poltergeist takes over again, or give the vicar a call, or throw computer out of window. I would love to hear from anyone who has had this problem and conquered it,... so weird!
so if anyone knows of any spyware or whatever that could possibly take over your sound ( god knows why ) let me know as i am intrigued.
Thank you Redwench for your concern, help and companionship!

included in spybot is an immunization feature, which i would encourage you to use. attached to spybot is another program called spyware blaster, which will also prevent some things being installed in the first place. neither will help your current issue, but can prevent some other nuisances from becoming an issue.

not on wireless? you sure? :p

Ooops should have said before, the only addition i have recently added is a broad band router, but had trouble with sound before this was even purchased
