Hmm... never heard of this particular problem before. Hopefully I can find you a solution or set you on the right track.
When that error message starts popping up for no apparent reason when one tries to start up the game, that usually indicates that a virus has corrupted the person's game executable. I'm not sure if a virus is the cause of your problem or not, but it wouldn't hurt to scan anyway. Please scan your system for viruses with an up-to-date antivirus program. If you don't have an antivirus program, you can scan with these two free ones:

How long have you been having this problem?
If you play any other games that use the Securom copy protection scheme, are you having this problem with them too?

Are you receiving a message saying: "Please insert play disc" (when trying to start the game)?

*Make sure to follow all the steps given*

You scanned with both of the scanners I gave you and nothing came up? If you don't have an antivirus program that you bought in a store, you should go get one and scan with it. I recommend Norton Antivirus.
Which sound file is corrupted?
Is your Classic play disc dirty or damaged at all?

Dude, this problem happens all the time...
It can be solved by looking into the Diablo II support index that Laggy provided...

I know this problem happens all the time, and it seems that the support index for the issue does NOT help people most of the time. I bet that's because most of the time, this error message occurs when a virus corrupts the player's game executable, and the player can never find the virus.
Most of the steps in the index are for when someone gets the error message when they try to start up the game... I don't think they are applicable when someone is getting the error message while playing.
