Hello, I use the gateway US East.

Starting Thursday night, I have not been able to log on to battle.net.

When it happened, I had been muling with a friend. I had switched chars 5-6 times to drop off and collect various items. I was going to change to my final and best character on that account to pick up the best items left in the game.

Then after I exited battle net, it wouldn't let me back on.

All of Friday, Saturday, and so far all of today (sunday) I have not been able to log on. I can't log on to any gateway.

It doesn't go past the "connecting to fastest server" message. It can't connect to battle net and I get the error message "unable to connect to battle.net" and that I probably am not connected to the internet - but I have a cable modem.

This is so aggravating, as my mules are expiring. Several already have and if this isn't solved within a week, all of my mules and new chars with expire.

I went to battle.net's support forums, but it was no use. Many other people are having the same problem, but blizzard seesm to think they have already fixed it.

I have even uninstalled an reinstalled Diablo II LOD (which means I don't have the latest patch now) - but it still does not work.

what is wrong and what can i do

Here is the b.net log I found dated from today:

3/7 15:50:58.125 Connecting to Battle.net...
3/7 15:50:58.140 querying gateway 127.0.0.1
3/7 15:50:58.187 searching for the fastest server
3/7 15:51:04.203 no servers found

I have already tried the reset servers thing found on battle.net please help me.

Was the resetting of your server list successful?

There's a Battle.net Gateway editor you can download somewhere off battle.net or blizzard.com. I used it to fix my little problem...

I'd guess the resetting of server list did not work because I still can't get on b.net :(

Do you have a link to that battle.net gateway editor?

I believe this should work...
http://www.battle.net.ru/files/BNetGatewayEditor.exe

You need to change what ever is there to "US West" at "USWest.Battle.Net", etc...It's self explanatory.... Post back with derails on if it worked or not, I'm gettting eager...

Is there a guide to how to use it? I downloaded it, but no instructions with it I don't think.

I did change the server name to USWest.Battle.Net is that right?

The rest, I left alone.

You don't have to use a "gateway editor" program to solve this problem. To solve it, you need to remove any hack and cheat programs you've downloaded for Diablo II, and then you need to reset your Battle.net server list again. Your problem is that your server list has been modified so that you're trying to connect to yourself; something you downloaded for the game is changing the server list, and you need to get rid of it.

This problem isn't Blizzard's problem, it's *your* problem. It's *very* common on that tech support forum, because people love to download cheats, hacks, bots, loaders, cracks, you name it from websites on the internet. Get rid of whatever you downloaded, then reset your Battle.net server list again.

Also, for instructions on resetting your Battle.net server list, go here: http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0227p

And I found the gateway editor to be quite easier than the regular re-setting instructions, but w/e floats your boat.

I thank you - how would I find hacks on my computer?

I seriously don't know of any.

I tried to d/l map hack about 2-3 weeks ago off kazaa.

It was not sucessful and had a virus with it.

I deleted it immediately and belived that I had deleted all of it.

I know of no other hacks. So how can i find them?

If this is related to hacks, why would it just suddenly stop working 2 weeks after I deleted the map hack that never worked? And I was on all that day. It just wouldn't let me after I had been on.

Actually, around the time I unsuccesfuly d/led that hack is when that "we got a big problem" thing started appearing. Are they related?

I seriously am NOT joking and I really need to get back on b.net to revitalize my accounts.

It sounds like the virus that infected the maphack program that you tried to download has infected your system and it's giving you these problems. Scan for viruses with an up-to-date antivirus program.

If there are any other hack programs on your hard drive, most likely they're in your Diablo II directory. When you uninstalled and reinstalled the game, did you remove the Diablo II directory from your hard drive before you reinstalled?

Usually this problem seems to not occur right after someone has downloaded a hack or cheat program; it seems to surface out of nowhere after a while.

Yeah. Sounds like something that you downlaoded had a trojan in it... Get a scanner like Norton or w/e and scan/remove what ever you find that is a virus/trojan...

After that, if you still can't connect, and your Server list does NOT look funny with weird names, try reinstalling.

going through my norton files, I saw that the virus detected and deleted from the attempted d/l of the map hack was called "back door beast"

from their dictionary of viruses : "Backdoor.Beasty.dr is a Trojan Horse that drops a file detected as Backdoor.Beasty.Family, executes it, and then deletes it. "

I have now deleted all traces of this and all traces of diablo and b.net.

Tomorrow after school I shall reinstall it and tell you how it goes :)

Two tips:

a. Remove Kazaa from your system and don't use it ever again. You really don't want to contract more viruses from using it. If you downloaded the non-lite version of Kazaa, use Ad-aware and Spybot: Search and Destroy to get rid of the adware/spyware programs that Kazaa dumped on your hard drive.

b. Don't go looking for little programs to download for Diablo II, it will probably cause you more trouble than it's worth (like you just experienced). Most of those programs come infected with trojan viruses that can steal your account username/password and CD-key, and most of them screw up Diablo II so it can't connect to Battle.net. Plus, if Blizzard catches you using a hack or cheat program, your account will be closed and/or your CD-key will be disabled. Just play the game the fair and honest way and if you have to search the map for some stuff, tough tacos. ;)

The whole fun of the game is searching for stuff.

Ok, please help - problem not solved!

Like I said, I uninstalled and completely deleted all mentions of diablo and b.net. I also got rid of the battle.net gateway editor.

Also, I ran many norton anti-virus scans and I even downloaded a special trojan virus detector. Nothing was found - norton says it detected and deleted the virus a month ago.

I just reinstalled diablo II LOD and b.net does not work.

Before, the server lists were not messed up and now they are. From top to bottom the servers are listed : Europe.Battle.net, Asia.battle.net, UsEast.Battle.net, Us.West.Battle.Net

I'm guessing that the gateway editor is responsible for that mess up :( I guess I need to download it and fix this mess? But as I have just demonstrated, I don't know how to work it...

Just reset your Battle.net server list again and the Realms should be normal.

Just out of curiosity, have you started running a firewall at all since this started happening?

Tarpols
03-09-2004, 02:11 PM
Eh, resetting it didn't work.

No, no firewall. I was on battle night all evening and when I tried switching characters again this happened.

I also have been emailing Blizzard tech support.

After I told them everything - they seem to think it is the gateway editor that is the problem and that they do not support such a thing.

Obviously this is not the start of the problem since I downloaded it days after the problem first started, but blizzard is stupid.

I will have to uninstall everything.

Then I will reinstall diablo for the THIRD TIME.

NegotiatorSmith

So even after you reset the server list again, you still have these gateways listed?:

Europe.Battle.net, Asia.battle.net, UsEast.Battle.net, Us.West.Battle.Net

If that's exactly how they appear, that's not correct.

Are you saying that yesterday evening you could connect again? If so, then you solved the initial problem.

Tarpols
03-09-2004, 05:03 PM
no, the initial problem was never fixed.

i just reinstalled for the third time and the gateways are still messed up - even after the gateway editor was installed.

before when i coulndt connect, the gateways werent messed up - i just couldnt connect.

problem never solved and now about half my mules have expired.

I'm not even convinced that the intial problem was the trojan virus - noron detected it and deleted it as soon as it was downloaded (a month ago)

If resetting your Battle.net server list isn't working because your Battle.net server list keeps getting changed, something is changing it. Are you sure that the gateway editor and all of its files have been removed from your system?

I'm really not sure what to tell you... there's *something* on your computer that's causing this connection problem. Formatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows will surely solve the problem, but I doubt that you're willing to do that. I wish I knew where to look for any other files that might have been placed onto your hard drive by the maphack and/or the gateway editor, but I don't. I will keep an eye on this thread in case you find anything else pertinent to your problem. Good luck.

I hope I solve this problem. I had an idea though - I installed diablo on my parent's computer. They will see it there and will not allow any games to be on it - so it was just to see if it would work. Having it there is not really an option.

we have a network - so it is on the same isp, ip whatever.

It worked - I was on b.net for a few minutes. I immediately went to my mule account to try to revitalize them - alas two already "character expired" and the rest "expires today"

I rushed to revitalize them. I revitalized about 4, then sure enough after I exited and tried to return to b.net i got the same "unable to connect" message

B.net must be doing this on purpose to discourage changing between many characters quickly.

I'll have to uninstall diablo from that different computer though, but hopefully I can get back on to revitalize my other chars so I will be good to trouble shoot for another 10 days.

Hopefully we can figure something out. Thanks for all the help so far.

Yes, Battle.net has something in place that will kick you from a server if you keep logging on and off of it. Your IP address is restricted from connecting if you get kicked off, and the temporary restriction lasts up to 1-2 days.

Tarpols
03-09-2004, 06:35 PM
I think that that is what happened - so I downloaded the gateway editor, what sat night - before the temp ban was up.

so then after the ban was up, the gateway editor had messed it up.

now i am banned again. :( at least i saved a few of my accounts. a few more that had "expire today" will surely be gone, but oh well.

Hopefully in 2 days I'll be b.neting again.

If not, you could uninstall the game again, then run a registry cleaner and try to clear any D2 files on there that may exist. I doubt it would solve the problem, but who knows? Hopefully you won't have to go through all of that again. Best of luck.

Didn't work, toxic.
Also, who ever said that this kid was banned because of a hack-job, wrong as well.

I had perfect connections yesterday. Did a few games, a few trades, and that's about that.
Today, I try to connect to USEAST and it sits there trying to connect.
I highly doubt that I've been banned, reason being I've been banned before, and they let you connect and they tell you that you cannot play until a certain time period has passed. Also, I've been looking around at forums and many people are having this problem.

So I don't have any real advice for any of you, but odds are, unless you have accounts on servers other than USEAST, you aren't going to be playing today.
