They said this
There may be software applications on the market that will perform the tasks you require. However, Compaq does not test third party hardware or software and cannot recommend or support such applications. And they said this
I like to inform you that, currently there are no driver updates for
CD-ROM. To check the availability of updated driver for CD-ROM
And this
If you receive the error "Please insert the play disc" when using the Diablo2 CD, it may be due to the problem with the Diablo2 CD. Also note that we do not have test data concerning the installation and use of third-party software (Diablo2) in your system. Your best option would be to consult with the manufacturer of the product you wish to install and determine compatibility with your system. Many product manufacturers maintain extensive websites containing information and specifications of their products. A local retail outlet might also be a good source of information to determine compatibility with a certain computer system. Be sure to match the software you intend to acquire with the requirements and capability of your system. If you have already acquired software to install, you might refer to the included user documentation and/or the manufacturer?s website fori nstallation/operation specifics. I talked to blizzard to and they said that i have to update, but what do i do when i can't update =(

Okay, do you know what kind of CD-ROM drive you have? What model? Or is that a custom-made drive by Compaq?

Diablo 2 has been known to be annoyingly picky about CD-ROM drives...

Post your complete system specs so we can help you better...

Try this:

Open up "My Computer" and right click on the CD-ROM drive. Select the Eject option. With the tray ejected, hit the F5 key. Now insert the CD and close the tray. After the light stops blinking on the CD-ROM, try hitting F5 while in my computer a couple more times.

Hopefully that will help the system recognize the CD. If you have autorun enabled, try disabling it and do as above.

Tell me if it works. It seems to work for me but I have autorun disabled.

Check the properties of the drive in the device manager. Uncheck auto insert notification.

I have a very similar problem. I had just re-installed D2 classic, and it let me play once, then after that I get the "please verify the play disc is in the cd rom drive" message. I have re-installed the game 3 times now and each time I get that same message the second time I try to play.

If you are using a backup CD, a burned CD, or a CD emulator program, use the original game disk instead.

I'm assuming you have the latest patch. ;)

Also Windows 95, 98, and NT users may have a conflict with Real Mode Drivers loading for their CD-ROM drive. Please disable any Real-Mode drivers, as they are known to cause conflicts within the game. For more information on disabling Real Mode Drivers click here (http://www.blizzard.com/support/securom/realmode.shtml)
