I receive this error message when I open "My Documents."

Runtime Error!

C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

abnormal program termination

I close the message, I briefly lose all icons and task bar, my docs closes. It has also corrupted one major document, it is now in a code Microsoft Windows 2003 cannot recognize. I can right click and get into My Docs although not all the folders show the pictures that I set on folder properties.

The problem is posted over the web although none of the solutions have worked for my situation. I am a computer novice, an old rookie; please help!

What OS? Is the computer on a network or directly to the internet VIA highspeed or dial up connection? What hardware is installed?

I'll assume you running XP.

Well, first I would run a Spyware Scan with Ad-Aware, AND spybot S&D which both can be found by doing a search on www.cnet.com . Tell it to remove anything, and everything they find. Next run an online virus scan from housecall.trendmicro.com .

Next do a windows update: open up internet explorer > tools > windows update > webpage opens > if you are prompted to install something, click yes > else/then click scan now > install all the updates listed in the side menu.

Next do a Scandisk and Defrag or your system.

Ok now that we know your computer is clean and running at optimal preformance. If all this did not fix the problem.

Make the problem occur or, when it does occur. Goto control panel > administravtive tools (may have to switch to classic view of CP) > Event Viewer, look for the last error under the application section, and system section, double click them and post them here. Once you posted it, we can get a better look at what the error is and what could be causeing it.

Also, try running a System File Scan, do this by, going to run > type cmd > then type sfc /scannow at the prompt > a little window should come up with the title of Windows File Protection and it should be scanning the computer, if it comes up asking for a disk, insert your windows OS disk.

If these do not work: goto start > run > type msconfig > startup tab > uncheck anything thier that you do not need to startup with the computer (get a pen and paper and write down what you disable for future referance) > next goto services tab > check hide all microsoft servers > uncheck anything you do not thing you are going to need > click ok or apply > click yes to restart the computer

If thier is any thing listed thier that your not sure if you need, post what it is here and we'll offer our advice on it.

On the reboot you will be promped with a box stating that you disabled some stuff. Click do not show this again.... click ok.

Hope this helps, im trying to run through everything before we do anything drastic...
