No sound, no internet

Ok heres how it is, i had windows me installed, then i installed windows xp pro on my computer, now for some reason i cant connect to the internet (i use dial up) or hear sounds..some one please help!

possibly, but not certainly, its the firewall and no drivers. if you did an upgrade, or *shudder* just an install of xp without formatting, it could be an odd conflict or corruption.
your dialup program should give you some kind of error message, like modem not found, dial tone not detected, modem is in use, etc.

Actually it says that there is no dial tone, and it says my sound is in use, iono and yes i did format the drive it started fresh with no apps/files other than the windows xp files

start with the important one, net connection. yank out the sound card, and remove the sound drivers. fix that later.

your computer is finding the modem, and it appears to be able to communicate. do the obvious, and check that your phone line is connected to the correct port. theres usually 2 side by side, one for a phone, one for the line. also use a phone to check for a dial tone, both at the wall, and from your modem.
