Try this:

Navigate to your Warcraft III directory with Windows Explorer, then rename the "movies" directory to "blah". After you've done that, try playing the game again. I suspect that your computer is having a problem playing the opening movie, and renaming the "movies" directory will skip the movie.

I'm glad to hear that the problem has been solved, but if you'd like to view the movies, you'll need to find the source of your inability to play them.

Remove any non-Windows video playback/editing codecs you have installed (like Nimo's Codec Pack) and update your video card drivers - see if doing those things allows you to play back the movies (you'll need to rename your "movies" directory back to "movies" first).

Or if he wants to possibly ruin some things for himself, he could go into the movies directory and right-click on one of them > "Open With" > and choose Window Media Player.

I'm not totally sure if you need a codec or not to view them with WMP, but the only other codec I have downloaded is DivX and it works for me.
