Earlier this week, I tried configuring my router, going to the site http://198.162.1.1 so i could create wciii custom games. Everything seemed ok and great, so I tried to create a game. I couldn't create a game so I decided try it again. Right as I was trying to configure it again, my internet went down. Now I can't have my router hooked up, or I can't get on the internet. But to configure my router I have to get on the internet. So I am kinda screwed and I don't know what to do. Please help!!!

(also, I have tried everything i could externally everything from changing the chords out, to reseting the router.)

If resetting the router didn't work, it sounds like the router is permanently screwed up. If you haven't already, look to see if a firmware update is available for your router. If one is available, see if the update fixes things up.

Before we jump to conclusions, though, I'd like to know exactly what you mean by "I can't get on the Internet". Are you saying that the only thing you can't do is browse webpages, connect to Battle.net, check e-mail, etc., or are you saying that absolutely nothing works, not even pinging the other computers connected to the router (if any are connected)? There is a difference between not having an actual connection to the Internet and just not being able to connect to a website. The router might not be screwed up, instead it might not simply be configured properly for your connection.

If there are any other computers connected to the router, are they able to browse webpages and such?

What other things have you tried, exactly? Please be as specific as possible.

BTW, I don't think it's required that you have an active Internet connection to access the router's settings; as long as you're connected to it, you should be able to access its Web interface. Have you actually tried accessing the interface yet, even though you can't connect to websites?

NegotiatorSmith, I can answer a lot of those. I mean I can't access the web, but I'm not very smart so I don't know how to ping the other computer. As far as trying to access the settings, I have tried it and it didn't work, so I just concluded that it wasn't possible without connecting to the web. Is there another Way?? And yes I have 2 computers hooked up to it, and neither can browse. The only way I am doing this is directly connected to the modem, which is unsafe and I would really like both working again. I had just recently installed Norton's on my computer so I thought maybe the firewall or such was screwing it up, so I disabled it, or I believe I did, maybe I didn't but I did all that I knew how. Hope that helps you help me :D

To ping another computer, open up a command prompt window and type the following:

ping (IP address or hostname)

To test to see if you can communicate with a computer on the Internet, simply type the following:

ping 64.233.161.99

That is one of Google's IP addresses, and you should get a response when you ping it. If you do, that means that you *are* connected to the Internet and it's possible for your computer to communicate with another computer on the Internet. If you don't get a response, something is wrong on your end, or possibly Google is down at the moment. It's more likely that it's something on your end.

What happened when you tried to access the settings, exactly? If you reset the router, the default username and password is the word "admin" (without the quotes). The only way to access your router's settings is through the Web interface.

If you installed the Norton firewall, it's possible that it might be preventing you from connecting to other computers. To ensure that it is completely disabled, go into the Task Manager and end all processes associated with it.

First of all, how do I tell which processes deal with Nortons? I have XP and it's way more confusing to me now. Also, the msg that showed up when I tried configuring settings was that the page cannot be displayed. Just like every other webpage I tried going to. Now ill try the ping thing....

Edit: Ping does not work, I tried pinging my other computer... didn't work. Tried pinging google.... doesn't work.

To get to the Task Manager, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click the Task Manager button (in case you didn't know how to bring it up).

I've got Norton 2003, and these processes are associated with it:

ccApp.exe
ccEvtMgr.exe
ccPxySvc.exe
NISUM.exe

Hmm.... All Nortons processes were disabled. Any other suggestions? Or should I just go down and buy a new router

What error did you get when you tried to ping your other computer and Google, exactly? Did you not get a response or did you get another error? If you got another error, what was it?

If your other computer has a firewall installed, disable it and then ping that computer again, as the firewall might have been blocking the ping.

If the other computer has no firewalls enabled and you can't even ping it, I'd say that your router has been damaged somewhow and you need to get a replacement. Before you do that, though, you really should contact Linksys and see what they have to say - I might be missing something obvious in regard to your problem.

EDIT:

One more thing... at the command prompt, type ipconfig and hit Enter. What does it say next to "default gateway" (this is while you're connected to the router)? Also, are you able to ping that IP address and get a response?
