View Full Version : Can't Host/Join game in D2 Lod on 3rd computer
I just bought a new computer and can't host or join a D2 LoD game on my LAN. I have two other computers hooked up that work just fine on the LAN. I can see the two other machines, I can transfer files, I can send info to the printer hooked to my first machine. I can do every LAN function needed except Join or Host A game in D2 LoD.
All three machines have v1.10 installed. My firts machine is W98, my second is XP Home. This machine is XP Home. As far as I can tell, my setup is the same as the other XP machine. I'm running a wireless network card on this machine, but the internal ethernet card did't work either.
Any help would be appreciated.

did you try hosting on one computer, finding out its ip address, and then on the other computers, typing in the ip address of the host computer to join?

If these are TCP/IP games that you're trying to play, as long as you're putting in the correct IP address of the hosting computer or other computers are putting in the correct address when your new computer is hosting the game, the only other thing that could be causing this problem is a firewall. Make sure that the XP firewall is disabled on the new computer, and if a software firewall is installed on the new computer, try disabling that too.
Okay, I sort of mis-spoke. I can host a game, but nobody on the network can see it. They get the same dialog box that says "Please Wait" with a Cancel button in the middle. This is the same box I get when I try to join a game.
I know I have my IP Addresses correct. We have been playing for over two years on our two computer network.
Thanks for the attempts to help so far. Anybody Esle have any ideas?

What about the possible firewall issue?
No firewall is running, and I disabled Norton Anti-Virus.
I have re-installed three times, and have tried running from the original CD, a copy, and a hard disk image.
My machine has the new Athalon 64 processor. Could that be the problem? Is anyone else out there running this processor?
Another update on my saga:
I just loaded Age of Empires and was able to connect to one of my other machines on the network. So that pretty much makes me conclude that somewhere in the bowls of D2, there is a bug. If anybody else has any other suggestions, I am all ears and willing to try just about anything (except re-installing Windows).
Thanks to all those that have read my posting and tried to help. I believe I have solved the issue.
I just reloaded D2 LoD on my other XP machine, and now it works. I did notice that in the leftover directory from the uninstall, was some information about the 1.10 beta version. It would appear that I originally installed the beta version of 1.10. Interesting enough, the program didn't tell me that I had two different versions (yes, I consider a beta, to be a different version).
So anyway . . . I can now hook up with my other XP machine. I'll have to reinstall the patch on the W98 system and see if that fixes it, after I replace the power supply which seems to have just died (always seems to be something wrong).
Thanks again for all your efforts. Happy gaming!
