I have had to use system restore a few times and I've found that a few software items that were obviously lost when I rolled back wont reinstall. I have tried to remove them manually from the registry and also used a registry cleaner but I get error message: Cant open INSTALL.log.file Has anyone any ideas on how to sort this out please?

System restore will take the OS back to the settings that was when it was done, you obviously have tried to uninstall items (program) via Add/Remove to see if they are still listed. Manual deleting of files/programs can be little dangerous and especially removing 'keys' from registry manually. Theare are good unistall programs available.
I see that you are from London so, check very good magazines like PC Answers, Windows XP Answers, Windows XP and PC First Aid, they have also several good cover CDs have good selection of tools for different problems. So on the way to WH Smith. :)
The lastest Windows XP magazine has also 1000 Greatest Windows XP Tips as adobe format, well it is actual book.
Some of the Programs are free, shareware and trial versions so no extra money is needed to buy them, well except you will be hooked on the magazines. :)

if it cant open a file, either the file is corrupted (or locked), or the subroutine calling it is corrupted. try a scandisk w/error correction first, a repair install if that doesnt help.

I ran scan yesterday and there were no p-roblems found. How and what do I have to do to repair please?

first, you backup whatever you want to keep, although if all goes well, you wont need the backup.
these are the directions for xp, might be slightly different for me or 2k.
you boot from the me/2k/xp disk, and begin the setup. skip over partitioning and formating, and begin an installation. it should give you several choices, one of which is repair installation.

If you have a friend who has Norton System Work 2004 borrow it and run it from the CD, especially the WinDoctor and Disk Doctor, to make sure that it is not your hard dirver that gives problem.
IF nothing works format the hard driver and start everything from fresh.
Hope you do not have a worm that you have not found yet.
