With all the sasser virus and stuff I am royally confused on what is wrong with my computer. I cannot seem to get any help from anyone. I have yahoo dsl, windows xp pro, and since last week have not been able to connect to the internet. My computer is not shutting down, or giving me any of the common signs that I have read pertaining to the sasser virus. But no matter what I cannot get on the internet. I have tried calling SBC and they tell me (per prerecorded message) that some users may be experiencing slow internet or may not be able to connect. Well, I am getting to a point where I am concerned as to whether or not I do have the virus. I cannot even connect to protect myself by downloading the patch for sasser. Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on or what I can do here. When I try to connect to the internet all I get is the page which says all the normal info when page is unavailable or the page is having technical difficulties and try again later. Stuff like that all on one page. Please help!

Click Start, click Run, type cmd and click OK. At the prompt, type the following and hit Enter:

nslookup www.google.com

You should get the following results:

Name: www.google.akadns.net
Addresses: 64.233.161.104, 64.233.161.99
Aliases: www.google.com

If you do, you are already connected to the Internet and you should be able to browse the Web. Most likely you've got some malware that is causing the problem. Download, install, run, update and scan for adware/spyware with these two programs:

Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://security.kolla.de

Also scan for viruses with an up-to-date antivirus program. If you don't have one, here's a free online scanner:

http://housecall.trendmicr.com

If you get different results from the DNS lookup, please post them. I'd still scan for adware/spyware/viruses anyway.

dont worry about sasser. as of yesterday, it was still considered an annoyance, it does no damage to your computer. if your windows was up-to-date or you have a decent firewall running, you dont have it anyway.

if sbc says theyre having issues, thats probably what it is. you can try (if you have the proper hardware) going to a friends house and connecting to whoever their provider (and account, of course) is.

sbc should have provided you with a dialup account for backup. although that is only useful if its the dsl infrastructure thats the problem. if sbc's server is down, that wont help.
