why and what to do about my system shutdown in the middle of a program.i have a compaq windows 2000 xp

It could be some sort of file corruption or virus, or you could be having a hardware problem such as cpu or power supply. BTW there is no Windows 2000 XP OS, its 2000 or XP.

Do you get an error message before your computer shuts down? If so, what does it say (exact contents)?

What programs have you had this problem with? When did the problem start?

I'd agree with what armystud0911 suggested, but we need a little more info.

Run Virus scan, a system diagnostic tool and registry cleaner to start with.
