Hi - I am posting this for a friend. He has a winxp machine with norton AV, norton IS, and adware checking weekly. As of today his computer did something strange. He cannto connect with icq/aim/msn/internet explorer (it is like they do not detect internet). however - he can use MIRC/yahoo messanger/Emule/Warcraft 3 . He cannot understand why half the programs can connect and why half cannot

Also - to test if it is a firewall issue - he turned off norton IS's Firewall - but the results were still the same

Adware gave no results, norton AV found no viruses. - replugging modem (on a private home line with no external firewall) did nothing to fix. So here is his question - what demon possessed his network card and what program he needs to remove it. I'll have to send it to him since his explorer won't open

Have him download HijackThis, run it and post the results of a scan:

did he do a scandisk, defrag, and reboot?

Hi this is the "friend" on a different comp. I will give that a try. Weird bug eh?

1. Did scandisk/chkdsk - no bugs
2. Defragged (took 5-6 hours)
3. Restarted - and it WORKS.

Thanks - but out of curiosity what do you think was the problem? I just can't understand why half the programs would work, and half would not.

you just get weird connection errors from time to time, particularly with IM programs. a reboot usually takes care of it, occasionally a good scan and defrag is required.
