Poll time :)

Just wondering what is the oldest thing related to the computer you are using that you are still using up to this day. I'm not talking about an old computer or computer peripherals that you gave to your parents or your grandparents - I'm talking about the computer you are using right now, the one you're using to view this poll :)

If the oldest one you have is not included in the choices above, feel free to tell us what it is :)

The oldest thing related to my computer at the moment is a stickem paper holder bar I bought at Egghead Software store. Remember them? I like to proof on hard copy so it is valuable to me and I take it from comp to comp to hold up my paper sheets. It's a long plastic bar with a plastic clip on the middle of it that holds the paper. Sez Egghead on it. The first comp I stuck it on was an Apple IIGS.

Yamaha YST-M10 Powered Monitor Speakers

Circa 1997??

Oldest "part" I own is probably an old Vectron computer circa 1991...blazing 8 mhz processor...could go 16 on turbo mode. 1 meg of RAM, 40 meg harddrive... 1200 baud (is that the right term?) modem, printer, monitor, came with GeoWorks.

That thing owned. OWNED

The keyboard I'm using on my computer is from my 1996 Dell.
The monitor(17" trinitron), and speakers on my other computer are from that same 1996 Dell.

Oh yeah, get this, one of my keyboards that is still in use some of the time is from a Dell from 1989 :)

I still use, every day, an Epson Action Printer L-1000, using inked ribbons. Still works like
a charm, no problems of any nature!

A REALLY old VCR I use to get a better picture for my TV card. It also is used for a stand for my monitor. The tape playing part of it is broken, it eats tapes. But it still works though, since it has a built-in tv tuner, so it gets a better picture for my tv card.

HP 1100 Laserjet Printer. Bought it from someone a couple of months ago for $50 and it came with a partial toner and a totally new one - works great! I've printed about 5 reams of paper on the partial toner already and it's still going strong! They sure don't build them like they used to.

First gen Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer.

I need to upgrade, badly. There's very little paint left on the buttons, and the rubbery buttons feel icky since I've used them so much.

I'm amazed it still works.

Well now that I've fixed up some old computers(that work). My oldest thing that I still use is a 1990 486 with an Intel Speedbooster that makes it go up to 50MHz Everything in it is vintage, besides the HDD, which got busted YEARS ago(106MB HDD was so huge and top of the line back then, kinda like nowadays how we think that we'll never fill a 250GB HDD lol) I was like, "Wow a whole Megabyte, on 1 floppy disk!" Those were the days...
BTW: What do I use it for? To play Descent of course!

I'm in the "other" category because we still own and sometimes use an old Compaq laptop that should need to be licensed as a lethal weapon. It is huge and weighs a ton.
Also, my father worked for HP back in the 80's and he still owns one of their early desktops and it still works. It also weighs a ton.
Thank goodness for the advancements in newer, lighter technology!

My oldest part is a 1 GB hard drive which i took out of my old 386 (which used to have an original drive of 240 MB!) and implemented it into my pentium II 233 MHz with 32 MB Ram. And yes I still use that system for typing my essays for uni... Built in 1997, everything is original as it came out of the box...ok, well I upgraded a 32x CD-Rom drive in 2000...

The 386 got eventually smashed. Pity. I also still have the original Soundblaster 2.0 Soundcard...but I kinda quit using it...lol

Which reminds me...anyone here who owned an amiga? I sold mine 3 years ago. Original 500 with kickstart 1.2...I deeply regret doing that... It was the coolest thing out there!

I have replaced almost everything but the 500MHz Athlon Processor, Motherboard, Case, and Floppy drive in my 1999 Compaq Presario. Upgraded 10GB to 160GB hard drive, replaced CDROM drive with 8xDVD+/-RW, memory upgraded from 64MB to 192MB, modem replaced, and OS upgraded from Win98 to Win2K. I still use my Mac Powerbook Pismo (2000, Firewire, 500MHz) and MacOS 9.2.2.

I'm using a keyboard i used to use with a 486, with a ps2 converter. 14 Years old, and still works fine. No windows key, no freakin' power/wake up key. It's great. Also, if you plug it in while the computer is on, it pastes the date and time in the current field. Not at all useful, but still kinda cool.
I do want to get a USB keyboard when i see one cheap enough though, but i hate them ones that have too many freakin' buttons. That's usually the reason i don't get them.

My oldest part that I am using now is a MAG Innovision 17" monitor thats 2 years old. The oldest stuff I have is a 400mhz Celeron on a ASUS MEL-M socket 370 board which I plan on putting back together as soon as I find a case cheap enough. My wifes comp is a Athlon 1200 mhz on a Chaintech board with 384mb of PC-133 ram. She's also running an old ATI rage pro 128 all in wonder video card, an old Sony CD-RW, and an ADS Microscan 17" monitor.

Hello

Well, i got loads of old things i still use my speakers are Creative 4 channel surround speakers, and they sound awful, scretchy and tini, also the base speakers sometimes acted like a mid- range speakers especially while some was talking the voice came thorugh the base speaker loud and clear, the base seamed to have bass boost on the 80 hz to 100 hz, i found this out when i put my 12 inch hifi speaker on the base output, since that 12inch speaker works down to 30 hz, the base that amplifier was defininty boosted at that 80hz to 100 hz, there was no lower frequency niether, i put my computer sound through my hifi now, most of these computer speakers are rubbish, who wants small front speakers, i prefer big 12 inch speakers, actually might get my 15inch hifi ones out, and my front speakers are 150 watts rms thats for the 12inch speakers, and 250 watts rms for my 15inch speakers, rear speakes are 60 watts rms, and centre speaker is 250 watt rms, those are all hifi, big cone speakes, the centre speakers are 5.25 inch x 2 speakers, and rear are 4 inch disco power speakers at 60 watt rms per channel. Since the house i live in is 60 percent sound proofing, you can't hear it much outside.

Although i prefer a wired mouse with a ball, and don't like those optical, i have used on, but it is as if your fighting with it to move the cursor, i do not like anything wireless due to the radiation risk, although my monitor is CRT, i see the X-rays from it are less harmfull than the radiation from a mobile phone.

Regards

Andrew

lol... this is like the time you said no one should use thermal paste because you thought it gave you headaches at work. Most wireless mice use radio frequency to transmit movements. Are you also afraid of getting cancer from radio stations that are sending out kilowatts of radio waves every day?

I just got a new Dell PC & am going to see what I can do with my old comp, although I don't think I can do much. It was an old HP computer meant for either Win 95 or Win 98, but the person my dad bought it from decided to put Win2K on it. The oldest thing I think I'm still using is the keyboard.

My computer is from 1999/2000, so it's not *that* old. However, my disk drive is 2.88mb. A friend told me they did a really short run on that. I can't even find any true info on my Nvidia RIVA TNT 64 pro video card.

I still frequently use a serial port connected device for programing Eprom-s. The device is about 13 years old and it sill works very well. The hardware and software were both done by myself so I don't need to replace it, all I need to do is make a cuple of software changes and it works on any system.

MMMMMMmmmmmmmmm. That would be my monitor normally. It dates back at least to 1998 and probably is a bit older than that. My parents bought it in 1998 and eventually gave it to me when their 486 died and it was used then. BUT then again, maybe the quad speed cd-rom I am using in this machine as a second optical drive is older than that. I've also been attempting to get an old floppy drive (5.25") to work in order to put DOS and then Windows 3.1 temporarily on my old Pentium S so I can do some stuff that's only possible with an antique OS....I also have the old 486dx mobo and processor which functions basically as a dust collector, but that doesn't really COUNT as "using" does it?

My brother-in-law is the head design engineer for an American outsourcing circuit board assembly company. But his previous job was as an engineer for Heath (a subsidiary of Zenith) and he even has computer stuff from before that. He uses monochrome monitors he has from the mid to late 1980s from time to time when testing stuff the company he works for has auctioned off and also has some of the very first color monitors manufactured for the public market that still work. Have I mentioned he also has a working 286? His son also claims to PREFER using DOS over Windows....
