I'd recommend reinstalling the intellimouse drivers, or download the latest intellimouse drivers from here (http://www.microsoft.com/products/hardware/mouse/driver/drivers_pc31a.htm?FinishURL=%2Fdownloads%2Frelease%2Easp%3FReleaseID%3D19921%26redirect%3Dno).

If that doesn't work, post back.

Nah, that didn't work. The problem doesn't start until the third or fourth time I try to autoscroll in IE after I reboot.

Change all your buttons back to default. Just use the scroll button as the auto-scroll instead of mouse3.

Do you have a game controller or other type of controlling device plugged into the USB port? Also, is the mouse on the USB port, or is it using the PS/2 adaptor? Try it in the USB port if so. (If you have a USB port).

Do you have any devices sharing the same IRQ's as the USB port? If you have installed any new hardware recently, it may have created somekind of conflict.

Post back with your system specs. There may be specific fixes depending on your type of system. For example, there's a USB fix for MVP3 chipsets that may help.

Specs: P2-350, 128mb, soundblasterlive!, 3dprophetIImxgeforce2-32mb, MSIntellimouse explorer

In order:
MK, that's not a very tech worthy answer :P

Ion Silverbolt: It is hooked up to usb. It is the only usb device I am using. The usb controller is on the same IRQ as my sound card (9). I really don't think it's hardware though because the problem is that IE doesn't like me hitting the mouse scroll button. That shouldn't have anything to do with my board as far as I know. Nothing new has been added in the past two months.

TotalRecall: It's version 5.50.4522.1800... newest version I can get. I also have an error reporting update for IE but it's never come up with anything after a crash from this.

Other notes:
I'ts been working fine so far today. I've been autoscrolling wit it on lots of pages. Yesterday I accidentally hit it and made IE crash on this page twice.
This is the only thing that makes my browser crash, ever. I have "ad-aware" from lavasoft, http://www.lavasoft.org/, freeware that cleans spyware (number one source of browser crashes) off of your computer. I recommend that for everyone btw. Thanks.

My 450 Cents weather you like them or not.

When you attempt to scroll through a Web page frame using the IntelliMouse wheel, you sometimes receive either of the following error messages:

Explorer caused a stack fault in module <filename> at <address>

or

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module <filename> at <address>

Internet Explorer then quits or your computer stops responding ( hangs )

This can occur if the frame through which you are attempting to scroll is not the active frame.

To work around this, click inside the frame before you attempt to scroll through it.

--------------------------------

When you scroll through a Web page with Internet Explorer, or through mail headers or mail messages with Outlook Express, your computer may stop responding ( hang )
This can occur if you are using an ATI 3D Rage II or 3D Rage II Plus video adapter ( this includes the 3D Graphics Pro Turbo and 3D Expression video adapters )

To correct this problam, Tru the appropriate method:

1. Obtain the latest ATI display drivers for your ATI video adapter from the ATI Technologies Web site:
http://www.atitech.com

2. To work around this error:

A) Click Start, and then click Run.

B) In the box, type system.ini, and then click OK.

C) Add a DevBMP=0 line to the [Display] section of the System.ini file.

D) On the File menu, click Exit, and then click Yes when you are asked to save the changes.

E) Restart your computer.

3. If adding the "DevBMP=0" line to the System.ini file does not correct this, configure your computer not to use graphics accelerator functions:

A) Right-click My Computer on the desktop, and then click Properties.

B) On the Performance tab, click Graphics.

C) Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.

D) Click OK, and then click OK.

E) Click Yes when you are asked to restart your computer.

Note for above method: Disabling graphics accelerator functions may also resolve the problem if your computer hangs when you scroll through a Web page with Internet Explorer 3.x.

ATI Technologies Inc. has confirmed this to be a problem with the 3D Rage II and 3D Rage II Plus video adapters. For additional support, You can contact ATI Technical Support at (905) 882-2626, and refer to Customer Support Answerbook #2851, or see the ATI Technologies Web site:
http://www.atitech.com

The following video adapters use the 3D Rage II video accelerator chip set:

ATI All In Wonder
ATI Video Xpression+ (Mach 64)
ATI Rage/Rage II PCI

To find out which video adapter your computer has, you can:

A) Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

A 1/2) On the Device Manager tab, click the plus sign (+) next to Display Adapters. The listed device are your video adapters.

------------------------

Few more notes:
You may be unable to use the IntelliMouse or IntelliMouse Trackball wheel to scroll in Windows Explorer or My Computer.

This can occur if Windows Explorer or My Computer is configured for Web Page view.

1. To work around this, use one of the following methods:

A) Disable Web Page view in Windows Explorer or My Computer. To do so, click As Web Page on the View menu.

B) Use the scroll bar to scroll in Windows Explorer or My Computer.

I know that doesn't help much. But microsoft openly admits to not knowing a way to fix this error. You can only work around it and hope for the best. Sorry!

Hope i've helped some.
Good luck with the problam!

Thanks for all the research done, Kerash... where did you get that microsoft info?
I'm not sure if I was always using it in the active frame... but probably. And it happened on both framed and non-framed pages alike. It even happened on the local page I have for my start page. The error always just crashed IE, not my whole comp or any other progs.

I should have written down the error msg last time but I know it didn't mention the stack. It could be the invalid page fault error, maybe. I tried to make the error happen in Winexplorer or a different app but it never crashed. Furthering my belief that it is an IE error, it has never crashed netscape but then I only open that up to check webpages I make.

The ATI info doesn't apply cuz I'm using the 3dprophetII (guillemot) card I listed in my specs.

The worst thing about this is I hardly ever even have to use auto-scroll because I run 1600x1200 resolution and can see most of a webpage in a single maximized window.

Thanks.

A good tip i've learned. Is that if it happens sometimes and not all the time. It's not the actual program causing the fault. It's a 3rd party culprit.

Though if it was a pagefault. I could help troubleshoot with you.

Try playing with it to make it crash again, so that i can know what exactly is hapnin'

Oh, Excuse the ignorance on my part with the ATI card. I tend not to read all post's, only the first one. And then reply.

Okay it's happening again. This time I've got all the details and other observations.

There are two error messages that pop up when I hit my mouse3 button set to autoscroll. The first msg says "explorer"!!! I'm slapping myself in the head that I didn't notice that before. The top of the box says explorer and then the message is "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module MSHTML.DLL at 0177:01c2b105. (But then my explorer is running just fine. the system doesn't hang, the next msg just pops up.) The second box says "An error occurred in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, please restart your computer." Then the window I tried to autoscroll in and ONLY that window closes. Everything else keeps running fine.

I opened up netscape right after this and autoscroll worked fine there. It also worked in Winexplorer with no problems.

I'm really not sure if the first browser I clicked in was the active window. I'm pretty sure it was but I don't know and it doesn't matter now, any IE window I click in crashes.

Strange, no? I will not reboot my computer and keep checking this for a while to test out any suggestions, report any more details. Thanks again!

Total Meltdown. I left it on like I said, then came back a few hours later, played some BG2, checked out some sites, email... then I tried autoscrolling and everything stopped. total meltdown. the first error msg popped up and then no response from mouse or keyboard, i had to switch off the power. Today I've tried to make it crash a window by autoscrolling when the window is not active and it works fine. I can't make it crash. anyway,

Run the system file checker under system information found under system tools. It can replace missing or corrupted files. You might also try the extract command and copy the file that you're crashing in from the CD. Backup the old file first in case an IE upgrade insrtalled a newer version.

Even so, the older one may work. If you need help using the extract command, check the help section in the start menu for info.

Thanks for the response silverbolt. I'm all about sfc... It's not a system file that's messing up. It's explorer that messes up when I use autoscroll in IE. I'm not posting again to just say that. I think I found a connection. I just posted earlier that the problem just happened again after going away for over a week. Well, I turned on ICQ for the first time in over a week also. I'm gonna do some checking over the next couple of days to see if it only happens when ICQ is running.
