I have two computers at my home and would like to use a cable and link them together to save some older files from one to the other that are too big for a 1.4 floppy. After getting the cable do I need a program to do this and if so does anyone have an idea where I can get one? Shareware would be fine and is what I'm after. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'm definately not the beset person to ask on this but... ;)

The most common way of linking 2 computers is with network cards, cat5 cable, and a hub. Feel free to ask more about this too. Once you have that all worked out I think windows is the program that deals with the network. Just gotta set things up thru there, that I do not know how todo well.

I'm not sure of any other ways to hooking 2 comps together. I just remember playing 1v1 doom with nullmodem cables. :)

If you don't have network cards in both computers, and you are only going to keep one of them running, the easiest way might be just to remove the hard drive from the older and place it in the newer, transfer the files directly and then remove the old hard drive.
Provide some more information and we will be able to provide better assistance.

The cheapest method of linking 2 computers togeter is to go out and buy a male/male parallel cable designed to network 2 computers using their parallel ports. You can also get serial ones as well but they are slower in transfer rate of data. If you are using Win95/98/ME, you can enable cable transfer by going into your control panel, Add/remove program, windows setup tab, communications, then check the "direct cable connection" box. It will ask you for your operating system (os)and once installed, you should be set. This way you will only need a cable and no software since Window 95/98/ME has it built in. I can't say for Linux or Win NT/2000 since I have no experience on those OS's.

You can get some USB options for linking computers together but I am not familliar with them.

YOu can also use network cards and some RJ45 cables. Network cards are cheap now and cost around $20 or maybe less. They come in ISA or PCI. They are very fast compared to parallel or serial cables but do cost more.
