I can't seem to share files and folders with machines connected to my lan. Whenever these machines try to browse my machine running win2k they get a message asking for an IPC$ password.

I would rather not enable the guest account and apply an entire group to the share.

I set up an account for each machine and set the correct permissions to these accounts on the files and folders to share on the network. And I continue to get this IPC$ error.

When I try to view this IPC$ thru the admin tools / shares. I get an error that explain that this is only shared for admin use.

Help. I'm lost.

Hehehe, same problem in my Win2K machine. This was basically why I couldn't share printers, because of that IPC$ thing.

I wanna know how to solve this, too.

I have 2 computers that share files back and forth with windows 2000 and it never asks me for passwords. I'm guessing it has something to do with the accounts I have setup.

Since i'm the only one that uses either computer, I have the same log on name for both computers and both have administrative rights. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Try adding the log-in name you use into the administrators group on the other computer and vice versa. If you're part of the administrators group, I don't think it will ask you for a password ever.

There'a way you can set the other accounts to use it too but I haven't messed with it yet. It seems more of a hassle and I really don't need it yet since no one else uses my computers.

If I find a clearer solution, I'll post back. http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif

Logical_1 from the helpers forum seems to have a solution. Here's what he said:

Create an account on the 2k machine that has the same name and password at the networking logins and passwords of the other machine(s). IPC$ stands for InterProcess Communications. It's what allows the computers to talk to each other. If it is disabled, you can't do anything with the other computer. If you don't want the guest account enabled, create an account that matches the login and password info from the machine you are trying to connect with on the W2K machine. That should fix your problem.
