View Full Version : Windows
Right now I'm running Win98 because it runs fine and no major problems except the occasional restart. We have Windows NT 4 and I was wondering, do I really need to upgrade to NT4? Also..is WinME a good upgrade or Win2k? Which is the best in your mind or do you have a site to explain this all? Thanks.

Well, the best upgrade path would have to be Windows 2000, no matter what OS you're using. If you upgrade to NT4, don't expect to be playing any of the latest games. Plug and play? Forget it.
Get Windows 2000 if you're gonna upgrade. I haven't tried WinME so I can't recommend it yet. If you want a website telling you the benefits of having Win2K, then the best place to go would be Microsoft's Win2K website, located here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/
Or you can check Ion's previous post about the advantages of upgrading to Windows 2000, located here: http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/Forum25/HTML/000024.html

I'm currently running WinME and I like it much better than Win98. I never seem to experience any of the problems that the ignorant fools, I mean, Microsoft basher whine about just for the sake of whining. Amazing isn't it?
However, I have never tried Windows2000, so I am also incapable of recommending one over the other. All I can say is that ME is based off a 98 structure and 2000 is based off of an NT structure. I hear that 2000 is also giving the functionality of a 98 structure on an NT structure so all the latest games runs just fine. That may be a good choice for you. Try em both perhaps.

What's wrong with NT so that it can't play some games? Also, what's up with Win2K and the "cartoony" icons? heh..I like my win98 icons http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/biggrin.gif

I have used both ME and 2k and am currently using 98. My personal findings is that Windows ME manages resources better at high memory amounts than 98 can but with around 128 or less 98 starts performing better. ME is a good OS but does have its drawbacks in eating resources. Now win2k manages resources very well probably since its NT background always has. Now as much for win ME it is based on 98 and will always have its similarities to it. They are both well rounded OS's but I would say the one I would rather have is 2k. Thought I don't have the massive cranks to put into that right now. 8)

Well for starters, Windows NT doesn't allow direct calls to hardware. That there takes a lot of umph out of your video card for one. Also, I think DirectX 5 is the highest NT supports which leaves it in the dark for most current games.
Some games will work on it though. I never had trouble playing Diablo on it. http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif
NT is being weeded out and it's tired. Unless you have some urgent need for security on your PC. It's a poor choice. Even then Windows 2000 ranks above it.

Oh I've heard horror stories when it comes to Windows ME.... if you were to choose between ME or 2K, definitely go for 2K.
I personally like to stick with 98SE.

That maybe a factor, but also take to heart that Each o/s is designed for a sertain indavidual in mind, Linux and Unix alike are open source, thus designed with the rather advanced C, or C++ Programer in mind, and they also have networking capabilities and Unix is good for hosting a large number of users at a time ( Good for a Server + advanced C and C++ programmers, whats this tell you? Yes! Industrial use. I.E: Blizzard Entertainment, though i think the battle.net service is hosted on a SunOS evironment, nonetheless! ) Though Windows is the most Efficiant Operating System for us Assembly hags and Gurus, and was also created with user friendly intentions, also: Linux and unix alike have little or no support for most or all games, though windows 9x & S.E support.... almost all games so in conclusion the Windows Operating System was created for the home / user-friendly, Entertainment use right? and if used properly, does an extraordinary job of it.

Windows NT only officially supports direct x 3.
You can get a direct x 5 hack, but it's completely unsupported. Only expect to play Open Gl games in NT. Also, like canis said, NT won't detect any of your hardware, so it takes a lot of extra work to get things going.
Also, NT doesn't have Dos, so you won't be able to play any dos based games ( like a lot of emulators and such)

Lag? What's lag? That's something from the 20th century, right?
What is the point of NT then? That may sound stupid, but to me it just seems like it has more bad things about it, then good.

What's good about NT?
1.) Security
2.) Power
3.) Stability
As I said, if you're a gamer, NT is not for you. Bad things are only for gamers. Servers, webhosts and large-scale intranets all use or have used NT.
If you're a gamer and you want NT capabilities, get Windows 2000 Pro. Otherwise, stay with Win98SE or upgrade to WinME...

Hmm....Maybe I'll try WinME, but from the looks of it, I don't like it http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/smile.gif Plus, the icons are too damn cartoonie.
