As they say, better late than never :)

Our staffer De Freak wrote a review of Chris Taylor's brainchild Dungeon Siege. Here's an excerpt:

The interesting concept that Gas Powered Games implemented here is the 'free' character class structure. At level 0, the farmer has no experience whatsoever at any kind of combat. However, this is where the specialization starts. If you want to buff up and be a huge brute someday, pick up the hoe in the vegetable patch and start whacking away. After repeated use, the experience bar on the Melee level will go up. This new method of leveling up is pretty original I think, and makes a lot of sense.

There, I fixed it. No, Christ did not make video games. He was a carpenter. ;)

the method of leveling is not original and goes back to several ultima games including ultima online. but it is a VERY good way of leveling and controlling experience since it completely eliminates the dreaded XP meter. but the system in DS only makes a mild pass at the learn as u go system since the skills once u get past the chicanery is still a leveling sytstem since u have to achieve X amount of experience to gain levels :) while it is a different method of gaining XP it doesnt really do much different than diablo2.

I hope someone buys the DS engine off GPG's and makes a real RPG out of it. DS was damn pretty, but they sure dropped the ball when it came to storytelling and skill balancing.
